Milagro
Milagro is a Mexican cantina on Mercer Street that features more contemporary (and pricier) Mexican food than found elsewhere in the city. On the menu are favourites like tortilla soup, chiles rellenos, chicken tacos and fried plantains.

Good location and is sophisticated. Food is OK...can't be california.

@ Doug.

It's not supposed to be California as it's supposed to be Mexican food. Living 10 months in Mazatlan, Mexico makes me somewhat of an expert on the subject of Mexican food. BTW, I'm not sure as to why that place has fried plantain on it's menu. Mexicans don't eat fried plantain. That is more of a Caribbean culture.

Haven't tried this yet. But regarding the previous comment, I don't think living 10 months in a country makes someone an expert on that country's food and it's the height of pretension to suggest otherwise.

If you must know fried plantains are delicious when covered with sugar or dipped in fresh crema with some cajeta. They are staple foods in the Yucatan and Quintanaroo regions ; which you experts should know is also known as the mexican Caribbean.

Milagro might no tbe the best example of what cheap mexican food is but they are honoring their heritage with tasty food...now if they could only make their margaritas bigger ?

I am still confused about the first post i guess california makes better food than mexico ?

Half of Mexico is on the Caribbean!

More like living 10 months in Mazatlan, Mexico makes you somewhat of an expert on the subject of Mazatlan's food.

They probably meant California has better Mexican food, which being from CA, I agree. Toronto yet has to give me a really great Mexican restaurant. I had high hopes for Milagro, they have great Margaritas and guacamole, but the dishes were just ok. Being a restaurant they try to 'fancy up' mexican food, when sometimes I really just want some good tacos or a burrito. I was hoping for a fish taco when I went. Milagro has good potential.

Wow. It was so not good. I had really high hopes, but it was really poor all around (but for service, and that was lovely).
Overview of my experience:
The guac- when they didn't ask how we wanted it, I got suspicious. When it came it was super, super bland. The chips were adequate, but lacked any sort of flavor as well and were pretty greasy.

The drinks- the house margarita- not expecting too much- but the mixer was super sweet and just didn't taste as good as I would have assumed by how much they touted their tequila. Again, I only ordered house, but it tasted like limeade...

The dishes- both of us were pretty disappointed. The concepts were good, but the delivery was just really bland on both of them. I'm not even looking for heat/spice so much as variety of flavor, and perhaps some subtlety. I got neither.

The service was super nice, fast and not bothering us at all when we just wanted to chat for a bit. The decor is fun and the warm. Given the food situation, I won't be trying it again. It was a pretty severe disappointment. My search for good Mexican continues...

I am from Mexico and we do eat fried platains, also many recipes will have it as a side dish. It is mainly something you find people from the Center to the South of Mexico eat, not so much North.

I live in Baja and my mom eats fried bananas, not traditionally from the north but certain people do eat, like others have said already that dish is more of a southern Mexico dish but we all enjoy it. Also, the people who have eaten at this spot, is it a fine dinning restaurant? Casual? Informal? I'm thinking of working there, i live in Mexico at the moment and thinking of going to Toronto and getting a good job at a Mexican restaurant but don't want a fast food spot.

Burritos are cheap(er) and tasty! I had a pulled pork one that was full of flavor! The tortilla chips were not very good (cardboard-esque) and the guacamole wasn't up to par. Their weekly drink specials are actually a good deal (not like some places...).
