Kabab Grill TorontoKabab Grill on the corner of Bay and Gerrard serves an impressive array of affordable Lebanese dishes including roasted and grilled meats, freshly baked bread and some surprisingly good pizza.

This six-week old fast-food style restaurant used to be a Java Joe's Coffee Shop and was briefly a Tower Burger joint before it went deadpool. Kabab Grill just might have the goods to make this space succeed.

Catering to the nearby hospitals, offices and condominiums, Kabab Grill features healthy alternatives which are 100% Halal.

Kabab Grill TorontoBest bets are their specialty mini pizzas like the delectable Zaatar ($2.49) that is loaded with thyme, sesame seeds, oregano and doused with lemon. It's baked perfectly and has a nutty and almost intoxicating aroma. Other pizzas here include a mild vegetarian (tomato and onion or spinach) to the more traditional salami ($3.99).

Kabab Grill TorontoThe baba ghannoush ($4.99) with grilled eggplant, sesame paste and tahini is potent yet sublime although it would be nice if it was served with some bread.

Kabab Grill TorontoThere's also an enormous kabab plate ($10.99) that comes overflowing with two grilled beef kebabs, pita bread, parboiled rice, salad, garlic sauce and hummus. The kabab is grilled just right and not too dry and includes crispy burnt ends (always the best part).

Kabab Grill TorontoFor a quick lunch, the chicken shawarma sandwich ($4.99) is sized ok although it tastes rather bland and is unspectacular. Beef, kabab, falafel and BBQ meat sandwiches are also available from $3.99 to $5.99.

Kabab Grill TorontoGarlic lovers have to try the spicy potatoes ($3.99). This side dish of fried diced potatoes sauteed with garlic and coriander is more garlicky than it is spicy but really adds another dimension to the usual flavour of fried potatoes.

Kabab Grill TorontoVegetarians need to look past the carnivorous name Kabab Grill and go for the salads ($4.99 to $5.99) including Greek, fatoush and tabouleh as well as the lentil and veggie soups ($3.99).

Overall, service here is friendly and enthusiastic although I'm deducting points because they serve everything in styrofoam even if you're dining in. Boo!

But I'll certainly be back for the pizza, potatoes and the kebab dishes.

Kabab GrillHours:
8am - 11pm Monday to Thursday
8am - 12am Friday and Saturday
11am - 11pm Sunday

Sounds awesome.

Does anyone know of a grocery store in Toronto that sells zaatar? I got hooked on it in Montreal and haven't seen it in shops here.

Excited to hear about a place downtown with zaatar pizza! Thanks for the tip.

MH, you can buy zaatar (the spice blend) at House of Spice in Kensington. I've sadly never seen the packaged, pre-made flatbreads with zaatar here in Toronto as you find everywhere in Montreal and Ottawa, however.

You can get the packaged pre-made zaatar flatbreads at Akram's Shoppe on Baldwin Street in Kensington, as well as just the zaatar. You can also find them in the shops in Little Arabia, around Lawrence & Warden.

Bring your own tupperware container to avoid the styrofoam. I keep one in my cubicle at work and bring it to restaurants and chip trucks for lunch.

Have used it almost 100 times in the past three years. That's a lot of styrofoam saved...

Whatever happened to taking pictures of the entire meal or at least the entire dish? I flip through so many cookbooks, and now websites, that use macro photography to shoot everything. It'd be nice to see everything in focus for once, and not just one tiny portion of the food.

The second-to-last picture especially is more intent on showing me the texture of the checkerboard wrapping, and without showing the contents of the wrap, and there's no scale in the mini-pizza photo.

I went there, the place rocks.
The grills are good, try shish tawook and the kafta (kabab)
The manager and the staff are so freindly and helpful.
The decor is the best in the fast food industry.
Highly recommended.
Note: Very cute manager, makes you come back

I work nearby this new restaurant and have only eaten there once and will not likely go back. Co-workers have also tried it but have been disappointed. I assume the positive comments are from current employees/manager/owner.

The young lady who took my order was quite friendly but once I shuffled down the line the "cook" was grumpy and disinterested. He didn't ask what else I may want with my plate (I had shwarma) and just plopped it up on the counter was he was done throwing it together. The taste was average with dry meat and not a great selection of vegetables.

Better to walk 20 seconds to the bright yellow house called "Something 2 Talk About" as they have truly delicious Halal cooking.

I love the environment, the food, and the workers here. When I walked in the bakery cook was clearly cracking jokes and baking a customers "speciality" pizza. I could see the customer and the cook had become friends over the weeks. I think it's a great place. I do agree that some line cooks could be friendly, I also don't except them to speak very good english. After all its not an american restaurant. good food tho.

I work downtown and I go there for lunch at least once a week. They have the best authentic mediteranean food that combine all appetizers, bakery and kababs.
I think it is the best compared to other place I have been to in the area.

I usually check this blog and others before trying out a new place (that's the first test). After doing so, I decided to try it out (second test).

I went out to try it today for lunch and had the chicken shawarma and the spicy potatoes (as per your recommendation) and both were delicious. I'll be back to try out the bakery next time. Oh, and coming back is the third test :)

Mike, Apperantly you own or you are advertising for that yellow house that's called something to talk about. I work downtown and have tried out that yellow house that you mentioned and it's not even close to compare it to KABAB GRILL. I'd like to say that i also have a friend that only eats halal and he knows that they serve the finest quality Halal in Toonto.
I don't know what kind of experience you are talking about when 98+% were completely satisfied, i've only had the best service with the freshest chicken, beef & pizzas.
Sorry i was just going to write a comment and felt ethicaly obligated to reply.

When Kebab Grill initially opened in the summer, I wasn't much of a fan, but gradually their food and service improved remarkably. So much so that at this point Kebab Grill is amongst my favorite Lebanese places in town, only second to Paramount and Darvaish. Their Kefta/Kebab plate is the best thing on their menu accompanied by a freshly baked pita, garlicky potatoes and rice that I can't get enough of. The sheesh taowook sandwich is great if you want something in chicken. The shawarma is blank and not my meal choice. The zatar on the contrary is remarkable. The staff is friendly, however, the service is mind numbingly slow on certain days. But considering how good the food is, I don't mind the wait. For over a semester now, Kebab grill has managed to remains a staple dinner for me.

Guys just out of curiosity what's the rice type used in Arab cuisines? It's definitely not Jasmine or Basmati.

How did you know it was Halal? I didn't see signs anywhere nor was it mentioned on their website, so I had to go with a vegetarian meal.

It's Halal. They used to carry a sign which they took off after the renovations were complete- but they still serve Halal food. For those who don't know, Kebab Grill closed for sometime because of some flooding issue. I had food from there today after what seems like ages, and man was I disappointed or what! I ordered the chicken shawarma plate and the meat stank. There was a gross puddle in the middle of my food and I did not want to touch the unidentified liquid. Since I was starving and had paid for the food, I decided to try out my order before I proclaimed it unedible. Something was definitely rotten in there. Can't put my finger down to what it was, but the smell was so bad my roommate thought something had died in our apartment. So naturally I did not eat any further. There was no rice in my meal. The garlicky potatoes were hard. The pita was cold and store bought, not freshly baked. The humus was missing. Suffice to say if I wasn't too tired I would probably head back to Kebab Grill and ask for a refund. I just hope I don't get sick! Definitely not going back again. It's just not the same place post renovations.

I hope this place get their act together. They were sooooo gooodd before the flood issue. I have had it 4 times after they reopened. The food was definitely not as good as before. Every time I went, they ran out of soup. The spicy potatoes(which were so good before) weren't really spicy potatoes at all.

The staff were very disorganized! They didn't know what they were doing...

I went in twice at around 2pm and I can't find anyone to order my food(I waited for 5 minutes)!

I really hope the management can read this...because I loved this place before!!

after the flood, the place had suffered financial and managarial issues. Have you been there recently? After late september, the place went thru a major chnage in ownership/management/chef. The food is better than anything esle in toronto. the staff is freindly, the place is clean. I was there last week again, they have now liquor. The meat is halal as per the manager. Apperantly they are going to introduce dine in upostairs along with a new menu (more italian/fusion type). I cant wait. The place has definetly rebounded. i strongly recommend you gib=ve it a try.
