Just Soups is a Scarborough spot that serves fresh soups with Caribbean flair.

Located in a plaza just off Sheppard Avenue, this tiny takeout joint has been in business for more than ten years.

Chef Sherill is the brains behind this small operation. With the help of her staff — which consists of only two other employees — she crafts delicious broths inspired by Jamaican cuisine. The restaurant itself wears these influences with pride. Jamaican flags can be seen throughout the space and reggae musicians, such as Bob Marley, are featured on the bright green walls.Seating is limited to a small counter near the window, which is also home to a small collection of plants.

As its name might suggest, Just Soups has a highly specialized menu. Though many other restaurants serve soups with bread, crackers or condiments, Just Soups lets the liquid speak for itself.

Soups come in four different sizes: small ($6.75), medium ($7.75), large ($9.25) and jumbo ($10.50).

Chicken, fish, veggie and red pea soups are available on a daily basis and can be considered the restaurant's signature flavours.

We tried the Chicken Soup, which was packed with wholesome ingredients, including potatoes, carrots and celery.

My only complaint is that the chicken, though flavourful, was difficult to find among the veggies.

Just Soups also offers a number of rotating soups, each associated with a different day of the week.

Simple options like beef, callaloo and porridge are available early in the week, while more exotic ingredients, such as cowfoot and goathead, are sold on weekends.

We visited on a Thursday, so the daily special was Gongu Pea Soup. This dish takes its name from its main ingredient, a crisp, nutty-tasting legume commonly known as the pigeon pea.

Small pieces of beef lend this dish a bit more substance, while a wide selection of spices give it a rich, hearty flavour.

Like the Chicken Soup, I found the Gongu Pea Soup somewhat lacking in the meat department, though the sheer number of peas softened the blow somewhat.

As winter begins to set in, a warm bowl of broth will seem like the best antidote to the cold. If you find yourself in need of a little pick-me-up, Just Soups has that in spades.Just Soups is located at 1143 Morningside Avenue, Unit 2.
