Il Gelatiere ArtgianaleIl Gelatiere Artgianale is one of Toronto's most popular spots for gelato. They're open year round so there's always time to pop in on Mt. Pleasant for some fresh and tasty gelato.

Made by and made from the real deal. All the goods are from Italy and the owners are right from the village. Try it if you dare.

I have never had a worse gelato experience than my trip to Il Gelatiere - and I had high hopes because this is right in my neighbourhood. I went with a friend and bought 1/2 kg of gelato. We walked in and asked which were dairy free (there were only around 8 flavours that fell into this category) and by the time we had asked for our 3rd sample, the woman at the counter snarled at us and asked if we planned on eating our entire 1/2 kg in samples. I sort of laughed, thinking she must be joking (isn't the whole gelato experience about being able to taste the selections before deliberating on a favourite?), especially because we were even sharing samples. When I asked to try the strawberry, she snapped that people never ask to try the "normal" flavours - we make them with fruit, so they taste like the fruit. But frankly, every gelato place is very different, and just because I like lemons doesn't mean I will like your lemon gelato. She said, people normally only request to try our good flavours, like chocolate (because I guess people don't know what chocolate ice cream is like). Whatever, she gave us the sample but by this point I was so pissed off by her attitude that we just ordered. At this point she said, which of you has the dairy allergy, and so my friend pointed at herself, and then she says to me, here, try this chocolate hazelnut, you'll like it. I was shocked. I don't even LIKE those flavours. I always order the fruit flavours. I never asked for the sample, and after she begrudged us the ones we ASKED for, she insisted on me taking one I DIDN'T ask for, that was about 5 times the size of the ones she gave us before. I declined about three times before I basically got embarrassed by her condescension and took it. Then she told me my gift certificate had already been redeemed and wanted me to pay, and it turned out to be some accounting error on the part of her staff, but the way she dealt with the whole thing left me ready to leave the entire order and walk out the door. Altogether a terrible experience.

I've become addicted to the Gelato here. It's exceptionally fresh and not headache-inducing sweet. Didn't have a server problem either.

My favourite are the non-dairy fruit Gelatos.

The Melone is absolutely sublime. I have no idea how they make it so creamy and smooth. It's Cantaloupe.. but better.

The Limone is the perfect for when you want to get smacked in the face with some lemon zing.. and kissed with some sweetness right after.

The Pesca is also delicious.

Just head on over, and enjoy!

This is one of the best places in Toronto for real Gelato!
The people who work here are amazing too! I should know. I live in the area.

Romeo, you know nothing if you live in the area . There is better, and it is on yonge. I have had so many bad experiences at this place, along with many other people I know. Never will I return. I would never recommend it to anyone with a palate.

Don't know what you speak of, il gelatere is awesome, their gelato is always bursting with flavour, we have been going there for years now and have only had wondeful experiences to speak of, also the place is always super clean. They now have a gorgeous patio...so enough talk as I must go there , the summer is running out of patio time.

Hey I was coming on here to say what a great experience I had at Il gelatiere. But then I read Karyn's comment and now my purpose has changed.

1) 8 dairy free flavours at an ice cream shop - is that not enough for you??? it's ice cream for goodness sakes

2) If you travel outside of North America, samples are not the norm. And you're not buying a car or a house, it's a scoop of gelato so I'm not sure how much deliberation is actually necessary.

anyways enough of that rant. Still love the place - fave flavour is the yogurt fichi e noci - i thinks its yogurt with figs and walnuts. yummy!

I have to laugh at those "gelato experts" who have such negative comments. Take this from one who grew up in Italy, this is real classic gelato. Stick to your huge fattening overlly sweet north american rip offs, if you do not like it, because if you do not like this, you do not like gelato, you like sugar and fat. MCDonalds has that for you.

The staff were extremely rude and made me never want to return despite living in the area. There are better places on Bayview. I can completely empathize with Karyn. I had a similar experience.

Karyn, you need to relax and be real with yourself! I have been coming to il gelatiere since they opened and I have had nothing but excellent service. They are alway courteous and in tune with my palate for the day. I have recommended il gelatiere to all my friends and some of them came from as far as oakville just to try these guys out AND THEY LOVE THEM!!!!

As far as your essay is concerned, you need to be truthful when typing because everything you have mentioned contradicts with all that I have experienced and my friends have experienced!

You want real Gelato in the city of Toronto, go check out il Gelatiere on Mt. Pleasant. YOU WON'T BE DISAPPOINTED!!!!

Best Gelato in the city hands down. Service was fine to me. The Pistachio flavour tastes just like it does in Italy. The chocolate is dark and not sugary like Gelato should be. Perfect.

well I visited and I hate.. I haven't had this good ice cream outside of Italy ever

Live in the hood. I have been a regular for a couple of years and the owners know us by name. Their interpretation have become our default go to when comparing others. (Jed's Frozen Custard, Hollywood, etc.) They pride themselves on using fresh ingredients and the favours reflect it by being both intense and clean.

It's a great neighbourhood hang out, as we bring all our visitors and a family to try and all have been delighted.

I highly recommend.

Just went here yesterday. Was pretty good. I prefer the Pistachio Gelato at Mad Italian because it tastes more pistachio like. Taste it back to back. You'll see. However the Pistachio Gelato is creamier here. I think it comes down to preference because both are good.

Perhaps the problem is that you have no idea what authentic gelato is?? Ever been to Piazza Navona in Rome? Il Gelatiers Artiginale has a store there too - and it's touted as one of the best in Rome! As for how you were treated? perhaps you were treated the way you treated them? We went in friendly and left with new friends!!

We went out for pizza and gelato from Hamilton - round trip approx. 207 km in total - pizza in downtown Toronto was okay, but the Gelato - OH MY GOODNESS - absolutely worth the drive. Sooooo fresh, soooo flavourful! And the owners and staff - fantastic!! Friendly, knowledgable, accomodating. The "to-go" containers are even worth mentioning - fantastically insulated and very nicely wrapped - just like they do in Italy. LOVED THIS PLACE!!!

We will be dining in Mississauga this Saturday, and have already google-mapped our way to Il Gelatiere Artiginale for dessert:)

To all you REAL GELATO GOURMANDS out there - this is absolutely the BEST!
