HarlemIt is evident that a lot of love has been poured into creating this unique spot that serves soul food of both literal and figurative varieties. Inspired by the Harlem Renaissance, Harlem strives to be not merely a restaurant, but a hub of local black culture. Artwork by local artists, including co-owner Carl Cassell, is on display, and live music (jazz, blues, funk, soul) is a regular feature.

This is the best food I\'ve tasted in T.O. period! I\'ve never been to a restaurant where I have requested to shake the man that created these masterpieces in the kitchen. If you want great food at an affordable price look no more Harlem Restaurant is it!

Greetings Carl,

Hope all is well when these few lines reach your side.

Not sure if you remember me (us) but we attended your place on September 19th...We were sitting at the end, close to the stairs and I was wearing a green and black dress and drinking a Sour apple Martini.

You chatted with us briefly - asked if it was my birthday in which I replied no...that "my man is just good to me like that" and you so kindly made us your 'specialty' drink which we enjoyed thoroughly.

I just wanted to take this time to say a SPECIAL thanks for your hospitality and the overall experience that we encountered that evening. In short, it was amazing. We were totally impressed by the ambiance, the food, the customer service (your staff) and the overall vibes of your place...oh, and the music...crazy! love me my Ol skool....

Steve and I couldn't and haven't stopped talking about your establishment; and since then we have decided to make HARLEM our 'joint'. It's been awhile that I have experienced a place so quaint and unique as yours and again....the food....spectacular!

Continued Blessings and Success to you - your crew and the establishment that you operate.

You will definately be seeing us again in the very close future.

All the Best - have a wonderful day!

Peace and Guidance, Joyce

I went to Harlem maybe about a month ago and ordered the lamb curry. The quality of meat was terrible. It was gristly and so tough - at one point I couldn't even chew the meat at all and had to spit it out. The curry sauce itself wasn't anything special either.

All in all, it was a let-down. Especially since I work in the area and had hoped for a new lunch spot.

Emma, give it a second try. I promise it'll be worth your time. Order the catfish lafayette, salad and cornbread. It's amazing!

I went to Harlem's today for brunch and the food was mediocre all-around. It was my first time dining at this location and I was very disappointed, particularly considering the quality food and service at the Harlem Underground.

When we arrived at 1:00 pm there were only two staff at the restaurant: one server and one cook. At first there were only 2 other tables but pretty soon the place filled up and the waitress had way too much to do. We didn't get our food for at least an hour. Most of the dishes did not measure up to the menu; for instance, our fried chicken with waffle left off the 2 promised sauces and only came with a v small amount of chix. Harlem sandwich was served on toast and not cornbread. Pretty much every plate was missing something. Loaf of cornbread ordered as appetizer was good, though.

Had lunch to go there today. If my meal was inspired by the Harlem Renaissance, I don't want to know how they ate during the Great Depression. Like the posts above, I agree that food was barely mediocre. Ordered the bacon mac and cheese ($6, and got drippy, flavourless mac and cheese sans bacon. Also ordered the sweet potato fries (I know, weird combo), and they were much better. Like Nessy's experience above, there were 2 staff people, one server and one cook. And although I had to wait a while for my food, the server was very gracious. I won't be back, which is unfortunate because I really wanted to like this place.

Good service and an interesting space, but really bad food. To qualify that statement, we ordered two appetizers and two mains. One appetizer was good, albeit nothing special. The other three dishes could have been served in a school cafeteria without standing out. The actual catfish was cooked well. However, given the rest of the dish, it is still not something I would recommend one order, let alone go there to try. The Jambalaya was watery and flavourless, and the plating of all dishes was comically poor. The food was completely at odds with what I expected from reviews, the decor, and, notably, the price, to the point that I was actually angry afterwards. I eat and like everything, and while I notice it, I am NOT one to care about plating, I am NOT one to care if some aspect of a dish was a little over or under cooked, or over or under seasoned, and I have NEVER written a comment about any restaurant. And yet, here this is, so take that for whatever it means to you.

The food was good but way too pricy. I didn't even order an appetizer and with the main dish and a juice and a cornbread ( which was shared and was tiiiiny) it was over $ 30! Although the place was not even busy they took a while to seat us and the live music... Another disappointment. The solo performer just played couple songs and just disappeared. Umm ok? O_o

Service: the way she treated us and the other big group was COMPLETELY different. After she found out were just getting the main dish and not the appetizers her expression changed and started giving us this attitude. After that she talked really fast when explaining the menu and made us feel uncomfortable. She was only nice when we were paying. Oh by the way they don't carry change there so I had to pay with credit. Ya.
