George's Deli & BBQ

Posted by Staff / Listed on May 4, 2009 / review policy

georges deli bbq torontoGeorge's Deli & BBQ is an Annex stalwart that was packed to the gills on a recent rainy afternoon, and it's no secret why. The window rotisserie unit was jammed with golden, dripping hens and the men behind the counter were serving up an addictive mix of friendly banter and salty, juicy, crunchy goodness. My chicken fairly fell off the bone and they didn't spare the crispy fries or the diner-style gravy. Quarter chicken combo, $7.50.

There is a George's Deli and BBQ Chicken near Queen and Coxwell. Is this a chain or are they owned by the same person? Can I expect the same experience at another location?

There a couple of other locations listed besides this one: Jarvis & Dundas St E and Danforth & Main St but nothing about Queen & Coxwell. I'd like to know if its a chain as well - more importantly if they are all equally good.

George's is awesome! As far as I know they are a "loose" chain and they aren't owned by the same person/company.I was introduced to George's by a friend who took me the Dundas St. location, which I remember was good, but it's been a few years since then. I went to one on Coxwell and it was horrible! Dried out chicken, soggy fries, dumpy place. I mentioned my experience to the lady at the Bathurst store, and she mentioned that the Coxwell store makes the other two locations look really bad with their crappy food.

The Dundas location is the Original locations of George's, it's been there 30 years and the food is consistently great. The Bathurst was the second location to open up, but both were opened by George. I'm not sure of the other locations but these two have never done me wrong. Great chicken, great poutine, and roast beef sandwiches to dies for. / July 24, 2009 at 10:23 am
What a great spot. The staff was super friendly and the chicken... delicious. The half chicken and fries is a lot of food for one person- so make sure you have an appetite!

45 years in Toronto and I've never had a worse meal. 1 cup Minute rice, 1 _really tiny piece of boney chicken, surely server - all yours for $7.50. I complained nicely and got insulted and threatened. I had to walk out to the shouts of the owner threatening to call the cops because I'd said the chicken was really small. Oddly there's a terrific place selling the same menu items 2 blocks west at lesser price

I frequent this place quite often. The staff don't really get customer service but they do try to please so insults to their meals aren't taken well but it's the charm of the staff that keeps people coming back. It's a pleasure to give my business directly to the people who own the place rather than a big multi-national chain. Chicken and burgers are excellent and beat any other place in the neighbourhood. Frankly, I don't mind if bt takes his business elsewhere so I can get served faster.

I also used to go to George's as well but have now started going down the street to The Grill Pit at Bloor and Manning. I always receive great service at The Grill Pit and that's why I'm now a regular there and the sauce and chicken is really good. I am also impressed by the fact that the place always seem to be really clean which might be because it's new. They really seem to appreciate my business.
too legit to quit / January 8, 2011 at 08:37 pm
I haven't really seen or tried this place out until I heard that my friends parent's owned the store. They told me how the fries are pretty good and cheap, and how the burgers are amazing too! So I decided to go there for lunch one day with my friends, and we decided to try out the fries. Little did we know was that it was packed, but we got our food pretty quickly and we sat down to eat at the back. I was pretty stuffed when I finished eating, but the food was pretty good and the service was excellent. I'm hoping to go back and try something new next time (: .

Just so JP and BT know, the best places in the city serve good food at decent prices and stay in business for a long time. George's was at his older location just north of Bloor on Bathurst for 15 years... the Grill Pit has already closed after, what, 2 years? George's has remained while MacDonalds, Burger King, Taco Bell, Swiss Chalet and various other places have opened and closed. Why? Because he makes good food.

This George's Deli has nothing to do with the other one on Serborn. The guy sold it and now its owned by two different owners. This George's Deli on Bloor and Bathurst is far greater then the other one! Food is always great, deals you cant find anywhere else and the friendly service makes you feel welcomed! So if you havent gone to this Georges in the Bloor and Bathurst location then I'm afraid your missing out!!!

No doubt this place is awesome. I frequent this place 2-4 times a month during lunch time. The Chicken Slouvaki Dinner for 8.99 with tax and everything is amazing. Fries, rice and sauce, greek salad and chicken slouvaki is no dobut amazing. Hamburger and Fries for cheap as well and awesome chicken. Lets you pre order in advance to avoid the long line ups that students in the area cause. I highly recommend.
