El Jacal
El Jacal may look basic but the Mexican food here is among the most authentic in Toronto. There are a variety of tacos, guacamole, soup, cactus salad, tostadas, enchiladas, pork and beef dishes.

My husband and I loved El Jacal! We love Mexican food in general, but this place was over the top!!! The atmosphere was a trip...we got there right after a huge US vs. MX soccer game. So all the locals were there celebrating Mexico's 5-0 win over the US. So needless to say El Jacal's was out of most of their most popular dishes. Which says a lot, because what was left was nothing short of extraordinary. Loved the nachos, tacos and the awesome dessert. The staff was friendly...we felt as if we were a part of something that is so rare these days....a restaurant with personality. I tip my sombraro to this fine establishment. We will be back and this time we hope that we'll get to try the guacamole.

This used to me our favourite Mexican joint, and it still is. But after they upped the price, it was really hard for us to justify coming there on a regular basis. There really are a lot better options given the price of admission.

Ate here a few days ago after reading positive reviews. The food (I had enchiladas mole) was okay but didn't justify the high prices ($18 for mains, $8.50 for a margarita). At this price point it would also be nice if the place didn't have the ambiance of a strip mall food court. It was nice that they serve cheladas (spicy beer cocktails) though -- I enjoyed that.

i went here a couple weeks ago and it was great. they do a vegetarian version of some things so i got the tacos. they had cactus in them, which was delicious. there was a little too much cheese but who is going to be upset about that. the guac was pretty good although the chips were overly oily. i would totally go again.

They have the best breakfasts in the area! 8.50 (tax included) gets you coffee and a huge plate of eggs in red sauce, refried beans and a mexican dish that I forget the name of, but is best described as "breakfast nachos". Everything comes with generous portions of fresh salsas. The service is really amiable and you never feel rushed. I haven't gone for dinner yet, but will probably do so soon (though as a vegetarian the options seem a bit limited)
