Bier Markt

Bier Markt TorontoThe Bier Markt has two locations: the original on the Esplanade and the newer one at King West and Portland. In general, the Bier Markt is best suited for a quick afternoon foray than an evening out. After 9pm this place turns into the Brunny for the Bay Street set. However, you can't discount it entirely because where else in this city can you find a bottle of Hoegaarden Gran Cru? On a Friday afternoon, don't even think about getting a table on the patio without a lengthy wait.

Generally OK for a drink or two after work, both locations seem to coast by on their status as the default destination for corporate outings.

As a restaurant I would have to say that both locations fall short on both food and service. The recent menu expansion into game items is both over priced, and under portioned.

The food service was lacking as well, in my last visit to the king west location we waited over an hour from order to delivery of our food, and without bread or anything to nibble on, patience at our table was wearing thin.

Overall, the bar section can coast on the excellent selection of beers, but if you are looking for a dinner, this is one of the worst choices in the city for the price range.

I recently went to the bier markt and had a horrible experience. The servers were rude and kept telling us that we had to get out of the way. We were just in the general standing area but the way the restaurant is set up the servers have to weave through the crowds to get people their food. There were a set of barrel tables near the front entrance and one of the older security guards told us we had to move immediately. But whats the point of putting tables in an area if you're not going to let people stand there? We had been occupying that space for most of the night until this security guard told us to leave. It didnt make any sense. I was just with 5 other girls and we're all easy going so we weren't going to make a big fuss. We moved and 5 min later our previous spot was occupied by 5 white guys. The security guard just stood there and didn't even ask them to move. My conclusion is that the security guard was either too scared to tell the drunk guys or that he is sexist or racist. I was not impressed. There was not enough sitting areas and everywhere we stood, we were told to move. I would not go back.

I love the Bier Markt on King West. The patio is always busy and the service is great. The servers are so knowledgeable about all of the menu and drink items that my girlfriends and I try a different brew every visit. Awesome for Friday and Saturday night crowds as they have the live bands AND NO COVER CHARGE, which is hard to find in the downtown core. Also awesome for a weekend brunch crowd with the extensive brunch menu and Sunday custom Caesar bar!!

I love the atmosphere at this place! I was at the king west location and although the music was really loud to the point of yelling to have conversation, it set the mood and added to the vibes!
HOWEVER - the servers are just plain rude and they are really good at ignoring you. So plan on waiting 10-15 min at the bar for them to take your drink order - and a rolled eyes. I loved it there for the scene and other guests I definitely regret tipping. The bouncer was pretty nice though. Also - the strawberry beer is way too sweet so be warned. That's all. x
