Actually, we've been doing it for 2 weeks now.

As happy I am about the gold medal win this morning, I'm also a little peeved that the hockey team is receiving so much attention when our athletes have been doing great since the beginning of the Olympics.

The real heroes are the amateur athletes - many of whom work regular jobs like the rest of us and don't have million dollar professional contracts - who still manage to train and compete at the highest levels of their respective sports.

@Rafa - it's because hockey is a winter sport a big chunk of Canadians are interested in. You don't see 3-4M people tune in to alpine events like you do for something like the World Juniors. I'm not disagreeing with you, just offering a reason.

A whole bunch of the amateur athletes are paid through government and private sponsorships and stuff, so it's not like in the olden days where 35 year old Bob Smith with 3 kids worked laying down rail for 11.5 months of the year then went to the Olympics to compete in bobsled... ;) I should stop trolling once in a while

If you and the NHL owners get your way there won't be as much fanfare over hockey next time around.

The thing is these people will more likely not watch than watch another even they are not interested in.

Hockey usually gets more attention because its an actual tournament that takes almost the whole Olympics to complete as opposed to events that are done in one or two days. I watch most of the events but hockey ive invested the most time in to following over the course of the Olympics.

Ummmm how many of these sports/events do you watch or follow when the olympics arent on? A lot of these athletes are competing in the nationals and the world events which are usually televised on CBC,tsn, and sportsnet. Or do you only cheer for these sports and athletes every four years?

I heard one of the Russian announcers state that the country that wins at hockey winsmthe Olympics regardless of the medal count.

Hockey is THE PREMIER event of the Winter Olympics.

That is the reason so much attention is paid to it.
