City of Toronto announces Nuit Blanche People's Choice winners

Posted by Derek Flack / November 9, 2010

The People's Choice winners have been announced from Scotiabank Nuit Blanche 2010, along with the event's economic impact. And they are:

  • Exhibition Project: Aurora, 2010 - Philip Beesley Architect Inc., Toronto
  • Open Call Project: XXIX, 2010 - Laurel MacDonald, Toronto
  • Independent Project: Flux and Fire - Christine Irving & Site3 coLaboratory, Toronto

And, economically speaking, the 2010 edition was quite the success. According to the City of Toronto, "Nearly one million people attended, including close to 140,000 out-of-town visitors. Based on results from an Ipsos Reid survey, the economic impact of Scotiabank Nuit Blanche 2010 was calculated to be $34.7 million with an additional $4.4 million spillover impact for the Province of Ontario - a 48 per cent increase over 2009."

Dumb question, how exactly does one get much benefit economically from 860,000 Torontonians attending a free event? I really doubt very much the extra hot chocolate/parking/ttc revenue amounted to all that much.

I'd also be astounded if 140,000 people came in specifically for Nuit Blanche...

I am not saying it isn't a positive as an event...but I'd bet anything it wasn't worth 35 million in extra dollars to the city of Toronto.

It was a shame that Aurora and XXIX were the ones you had to wait in line for hours to see.

Oh, I'm glad Aurora won. There was some nice stuff and some meh stuff this year, but that's one of the only ones that really hit me in the gut.

THANK YOU! Thank you to everyone who visited, interacted and voted for Flux and Fire. I look forward to producing more interactive - be it media or fire - art to share.

For those that did not get to talk to us - including the reviewer for zone three - feel free to check out the Flux and Fire website for the philosophy behind the art piece: http://www.fluxandfire.ca/

I'm not sure, perhaps you should ask the many people whose choice it was.

Alex, a lot of the revenue would've been generated by increased food and liquor spending. More people out of their homes and bars open past 2 AM definitely contributed.
