Rocco Rossi pulls out of the mayoral race

Posted by Derek Flack / October 13, 2010

Rocco Rossi drops out mayoral raceRocco Rossi has dropped out of the Toronto mayoral race. After a poll released earlier this afternoon revealed his support at just four per cent with decided voters, it's hardly a surprise that he's decided to pack it in.

He made the announcement tonight at his campaign office at 185 Avenue Road. "My message is not what the majority of Torontonians want to focus on...and I don't want to distract from Torontonians taking a very long look at the front-runners," he said shortly after 9 p.m.

Although Rossi had been defiant in the face of single-digit numbers over the last couple of months, the combination of this most recent poll and the recent loss of a number of supporters, including former campaign manager Sachin Aggarwal, appears to have been the icing on the cake.

What remains to be seen is which candidate Rossi's departure benefits the most. Insofar as he did not endorse another member of the race, both Rob Ford and George Smitherman will be after the small percentage of voters previously in Rossi's corner.

I never really liked what he had to offer ever even since i read that interview with him here on BLOGTO. Still he did the noble thing- glad to see he isnt supporting any one candidate.

Hey Daniel, a David spade called from 1992 called, he wants his catchphrase back. I don't support Rocco and disagreed with his entire platform but the guy had class and has to be respected. Basically the opposite of you and 'Rossi spoof campaign'. Wankers.

Remind me again why Warren Kinsella--the man behind Rocco Rossi and John Tory--is considered such a brilliant political strategist?

Because he hitched his wagon to Jean Chretien oh-so-many years ago?

So now that Rossi is out (probably has something to do with the dumbass Spadina Expressway idea), how about all of the anti-Ford people hitch their wagon to Pantalone? There's a better alternative to Ford than the eHealth sack of shit.

You mean the guy who was second in command when the city spent itself into trouble and bent over for his union friends? Normally, my political affiliations indicate that I would support him and as much as it pains me to say it, Pantalone is the LAST thing this city needs. He's had eight years and he's done nothing but help quite a lot of people, who aren't me or you, get filthy rich off the backs of you and me.

KL Please inform yourself on the REAL city finances - this city has a surplus- 15 Billion in assets - Has been voted the most livable city in the world just last week - Pantalone has been on council for 30 years and has done so much- Pantalone has the only Sane voice in this election

You have no idea what you're talking about. The city owns properties that they have no interest in selling. That's the $15B in assets you speak of. The city is dead broke. Broke. Penniless. And Pantalone and Miller allowed unions to run amok with wildcat strikes and "unreasonable" demands that were always eventually met. YOU look it up and YOU do the research.

Rocco found out there's an empty tunnel in Chile to hide in. He's so much into dark tunnels, he used it as his political strategy for his bid as mayor of Toronto.

What a wimp.

In our area, about 20% of those who vote do so in advance polls. We voted last week. Anyone dropping out of any race after the advance polls have opened will cause a skewering of the results and thwarting the democratic process. This was a very questionable move by Rossi and should guarantee his lack of success in future mayoral ambitions. Both Rossi and Sarah Thomson claimed to be a different type of politician and both stated that they would hang in until the end of the race. First Thomson and now Rossi have proved themselves to be like all the other politicians; say one thing and do another. Both candidates are very disappointing, not because they had bad ideas but because they lacked the conviction to back up their beliefs by staying in the race.
