Bixi reported to have hit 1000 subscriptions

Posted by Robyn Urback / October 18, 2010

Yvonne Bambrick, Director of Communications & Events for the Toronto Cyclists Union tweeted earlier tonight that Bixi Toronto has hit its goal of 1000 subscriptions ahead of its November deadline. That means the bike sharing program will be a go come spring 2011.

The final 100 subscriptions were bought by AutoShare, who also announced the purchase via Twitter this evening.

The first phase of the program will incorporate 1,000 bikes at 80 docking stations. The station locations have yet to be announced.

Don't they also have to bring corporate sponsorship up to $600,000 before the City commitment kicks in? Last I heard they were at $450,000, with ING being the sole sponsor.

When you can fine a BIXI bike east of the DVP, then I'll take this program seriously!!

I wish them well and hope to sign up one day -- but this programme won't be a success until they expand the zone significantly. I mean, you'd think that queen west would be a prime target for bike-sharing, but the zone stops at spadina!

I am thrilled for BIXI! But for the people worried about expansion, one thing at a time. Let the inner city bikes prove to be a success and then things will expand.

Way to go!
