Martin Sheen joins Royal York strike

Posted by Robyn Urback / September 10, 2010

Martin Sheen joined the picket line outside the Royal York Hotel this morning for some reason.

Probably bored before the TIFF premiere of his son's movie, Sheen sported a sign reading "On strike for justice Unite Here," whilst banging drums and chanting along with the 30 or so protesters. "I've been a union member all my adult life," Sheen told the Toronto Star. "I've been involved in labour struggles all my adult life and I support it."

"It," in case Sheen just picked up a sign without knowing details of the strike (he wouldn't!), is a fight for better shift hours and fewer cutbacks. Workers walked off the job this morning.

This post has all the glib snideness and proud ignorance that will make Robyn Urback a great Maclean's columnist when they let her out of the oncampus barracks. Anyway, even though it's just the trolling of professional blogs to increase pageviews, I'll bite and try to explain why what Martin Sheen did is quite practical. Whatever motivations Urback could divine for it, it increased the prominence of the picket line, producing the situation for an article that more people will actually read because of Sheen's name in the headline. Visiting a picket line with support and/or supplies is part of what having a picket line is supposed to engender.

And then Urback ends with a tired "lol celebrity activism is so dumb they just pick up signs amirite." Nothing in this case suggests that and as you showed, the strike is not very difficult to explain to people passing by, or even celebrity guests.

Thats pretty cool that he did that. :) I hope all of the support helps resolve the dispute.

In the video the G&M has up Sheen says he's talked to all the actors staying at the Royal York and they've all agreed to stay elsewhere if the union asks them to. He's doing more than strolling around with a sign, Robyn. It's great that he's supporting those workers.

thanks for that professor ass-hat. she wasn't ripping on sheen in the article, that you clearly didn't read very well. she was just making light of the situation. its not often a big name celebrity joins a picket line with regular 9-5ers. its kinda funny, so get a sense of humor and learn how to quote people. where in that article did you read, "lol celebrity activism is so dumb they just pick up signs amirite."?? and OMG could you sound MORE arrogant and pretentious in your comment? "glib snideness"? "Whatever motivations Urback could divine for it"? "And then Urback ends with a tired "[insert misquote here]"? nobody in the real world talks this way. who are you, the monopoly man? or are you just one of those guys that uses smart sounding words to hide his own ignorance of the world?

you sir, are a poopoo-face.
