Bell Lightbox corner named "Reitman Square"

Posted by Robyn Urback / September 8, 2010

Reitman SquareThe downtown block housing the Bell Lightbox, new headquarters for the Toronto International Film Festival, has been named Reitman Square after Leslie and Clara Reitman.

Clara and Leslie purchased a car wash in the 1960s in the area north of King Street West between John and Widmer. The rest, as they say, is history.

Back in 2008, it was announced that the area would be named after the family. The couple's children were onsite for the dedication ceremony today.

"Ivan, Agi and Susan's recognition of their parents' commitment and vision has played a vital role in the realization of this dream, building a home for film at TIFF Bell Lightbox," TIFF CEO Piers Handling said in a statement.

Is there a square at the Bell Lightbox?

A square is an open space. Like a piazza.

It is not a building that happens to take up a block.

Is this where the Duke of Argyle used to be?

It's named after the Rietmans because Ivan Reitman's father and mother, Holocaust survivors, came to this country and opened a car wash on this location.

They donated the land to thank the people of Canada.

Do you feel like an ass stephan splhatberg, you bigot?

I'd prefer if it were "Reitman Corner" or something... the idea of a square suggests some sort of open, public space, which the Lightbox clearly isn't. (I've no problems with the Lightbox, I just object to calling it a square).
