Inspection finds no bedbugs at Scotiabank theatre

Posted by Robyn Urback / August 31, 2010

After a scare yesterday that one of the downtown theatres for the Toronto International Film Festival may have bedbugs, Cineplex says a pest control company has given the all clear.

Cineplex hired Abell Pest Control Inc. to do an investigation at Scotiabank theatre after a movie-goer tweeted she believed she had been bitten by bedbugs after visiting the theatre. But an overnight search turned up nothing.

"After a thorough investigation overnight, which involved a specially trained sniffing dog and a secondary visual inspection, Abell has confirmed that there were no bed bugs located within the Scotiabank theatre," Cineplex said in a statement.

At least that one Toronto building scratched (excuse the pun) off the bedbug list.

Well that's very interesting: Abell doesn't use dogs. I just called them to ask. Visual inspection rate is about 30%.

As far as I can tell this is the only dog in use for bedbugs: http://www.puritypestcontrol.com/k9unit/dogs.html

@ JoeParez, these bugs are not about showering or cleanliness. Think about it, some of the top hotels have them.

Hey, good idea! Showering might make you even more attractive to bedbugs!

They're like mosquitoes. They feed off blood, not squalor. (However, bug spray doesn't deter them.)

Interesting...the complainant woke up at 3 in the morning itching. If he was bitten at the theatre i think he would've noticed a little earlier than 7 hours later. Me thinks they are the ones with bed bugs; they just don't want to admit it.

@ MarkG and Jacob -- clearly, I was joking and not being serious.

An update to the Morning Brew for this item wouldn't go amiss.

It was easy to mistake you as serious. You'd be surprised at the sheer lack of knowledge about these things.

My understanding is that the bites don't start to manifest right after the biting occurs. They can take 12 to 24 hours to appear.

Canada doesn't have nearly enough terrifying news stories. We should really look to the U.S. for good examples.

here's an idea. get rid of your bed and sleep in the bathtub. they're not tubbugs, after all. or sleep on the floor. or sleep standing up. problem solved. you're welcome.

Ugh...thanks for SARS II, idiots! The world is now creeped out about Toronto, and once again thinking we're Bug Central.

Is it wrong to want to douse the trigger-happy bozos responsible for this mess with DDT??
