New Church Street condo deal sparks community uproar

A new 25-storey condo is in the works for the corner of Church and Gloucester streets, and some residents aren't happy.

596 Church St. is set to be demolished to make room for the new condo, even though the building was listed as a heritage property in October.

"One of the most pressing issues in Ward 27 is the constant pressure of reckless development and how it threatens our local neighbourhood," Ward 27 city council candidate Kristyn Wong-Tam wrote in a media release.

Wong-Tam said some residents didn't even know about the project.

"They could have had community meetings; there's nothing stopping council from that," said Wong-Tam, "but there were no community meetings that I know of."

Based on the Bedbug Registry reports of 596 Church St., I'd say it's not too much of a loss.
