this place is nasty. looks good at a glance, take a closer look at the severe lack of sanitation and obvious cross contamination, starting with the owner. the staff is not overly knowledgeable about the products and you get a sense that they'd rather be anywhere else.

wow. its weird that you would say that, i've been going there for years and think its fantasic. some of the younger staff get confused sometimes, but there is always someone there to answer any of my questions.

BLoor MEat Market is a great place. Charming...and you can tell from the smell it is CLEAN. At least you know where the meat is coming from. And free-range, grain fed etc. VERY FRESH
That "animal on" commentator might be a rival-deli owner OR someone who thinks cellophane keeps things clean and fresh. How about ground beef that come from a 4-foot-ball field-sized plant - and the convoluted process of saving costs - of fat trimmings and discarded lean scraps remarbleized to ressemble natural meat - as NYT yesterday described: " made from a mix of slaughterhouse trimmings and a mash-like product derived from scraps that were ground together at a plant in Wisconsin. The ingredients came from slaughterhouses in Nebraska, Texas and Uruguay, and from a South Dakota company that processes fatty trimmings and treats them with ammonia to kill bacteria.NYT article, Oc. 6" Phew. YOu can't trace bacteria back to a specific herd when you buy the big brand names.

Are you kidding, this place is one of the best in Toronto, I have been going there for years. The staff are wonderful, and very knowledgeable. On any Saturday you can't even step into this place without bumping into someone because it's packed.
Myself like many others in Toronto and other parts of the city will continue to shop here.

I do like this place, however... why is the chicken breast meat so large? My feeling is this chicken is not free range and these are obese chickens that probably can not stand on their own 2 feet due to their weight.

If a chicken breast is the size of a normal turkey breast then something does not add up.

Whoever doesn't like this place needs therapy. That would be you, Animal. Very appropriate handle you've got there. Except it doesn't explain your OCD issues.

This is an excellent butcher. Animal is the first person I've ever heard who doesn't like the place.

And Yolanda, just cut the breast into smaller pieces. You sound like some animal rights conspiracy theorist or something.

I have visited Bloor Meats numerous times and think it's amazing! I'm shocked that "animal" is lambasting it. The steak there is wonderful!

This is the best butcher in the city. Clean, fresh meats, and a friendly and knowledgeable staff. Whoever doesn't like it does not know meats!!!

Hey Will - I'm not an animal rights conspiracy theorist, but I do however know what healthy animals should look like. It's a shame that Bloor Meat market doesn't support free range, non antibiotic, organic farming. It's not a conspiracy - it's a fact about what factory farming does to our health, our environment and animals.

I challenge you all to eat proper meat and you will notice the difference!

i am just about to move to toronto, 18 days and counting, our realtor took us for a stroll through our new neighbourhood, bloor west. because i will be attending culinary school in toronto and have a passion for food i wanted to track down some markets, meat, fish, fruit and veg. i walked into this meat market, smell was good, they were butchering meat where i could see, and doing a good job i might add. i was immediately asked if i needed help, i explained i was looking for a good butcher and asked about some meats. the man behind the counter came out to shake my hand. (at this time two seperate people walked in and were adressed by their names, thats service) i told the man, Ed, as he introduced himself and gave me his card, my situation, he told me to follow him to the sidewalk in front of the store. we stood out there for about 5 mins as he told me and pointed to where all the other markets were and even explained if i was looking for some more european style sausages and things, where i could find them... why would he do this? kindness, and he knows he has a good product, plain and simple. if this meat market was a bar, it would be called Cheers... this will be the meat market i will buy from when i move to my new condo... Thanks ED, i still have your card in the front of my wallet... see you in a few weeks, can't wait to be a regular.. in closing he asked my name twice, i will soon be the one walking in adressed by name.....ps_i never write comments but after reading animal's comment i figured id put in my two cents, sorry for the length.

Ryan, I am pleased you were introduced to Bloor Meat Market.
It is absolutely the best you will find. I have been going there for 20+ years and have never been disappointed. When I lived in Bloor West, used to go almost weekly. Now that I have been living in Mississauga, I get down there as much as I can.
The cashier who lives close to my home in Mississauga and offers to drop off anything I need - now that is service!

okay ANIMAL i worked at bloor meat market and it is a very sanitary place. The people there treat you like gold and you get great quality food. We are very clean here. There is no "cross contamination" so you can take your stupid ass comment and shove it up your hairy ass!
