15,000 photos of Cherry Beach in four minutes

Posted by Derek Flack / February 25, 2011

Cheery Beach time-lapse TorontoEarlier this week we shared an impressive time-lapse video of Toronto made for the Belarusian rock band, Lyapis Trubetskoy. It was pretty fantastic from a photographic standpoint, even if it wasn't so appealing to North American ears. Well, here's a rival to that video, one with equally impressive imagery and far more palatable music (by the Handsome Furs).

The work of Ben Lean (who goes by *Imperialis* on Flickr), the time-lapse is composed of a whopping 15,000 still photographs, all of which were taken in and around Cherry Beach this winter. We've actually already featured a couple of these in our photo of the day and other posts, so it's exciting to see the complete project. Time-lapses tend to work best with bustling subject matter like city streets and malls, but this effort proves an exception to that rule with its clever documentation of life along the waterfront. Having said that, my absolute favourite part comes at the 2:50 mark when the sun suddenly sets on the Toronto skyline. Just superb stuff. Check it out below.

What's the song this is set to? A credit would have been nice for that.

D'oh. Ignore my comment. I re-read the article and found it - was expecting to see it in the video.

The musical credit would go to Handsome Furs.

This is a great timelapse, one of the best, if not the best, I've seen of Toronto.

But how did he get all these shots of Cherry Beach without a single dog in them?! Every time I go its like Dogapalooza out there :)

Big Thanks to Handsome Furs for the use of their track "What We Had". No dogs at 3:00 AM, but during peak hours I had to be strategic.

Makes you stop and stare and tap your foot from start to finish. Cherry Beach at its best. A fine piece of work Ben.

Just 4 photos would be good. One per minute. !5,000 is too many!

15,000 pictures is not too many, it is the perfect amount. This composition is flawless. It must have taken hours upon hours to shoot and edit. The time-lapse makes it so interesting to watch but above that, the photos themselves are stunning and impeccably lit. (And FYI, the music IS credited in the video, you just have to watch the whole thing)

VERY well done. Through patience and hard work, Ben has created a great video.

There are so many wonderful things here. The great sense of depth. The shifting of the ice. The movement of the stars, clouds and planes. The bobbing birds. The lights into the clouds.

The song choice is perfect. The first verse of the Handsome Furs’ What We Had is “It's cold. A plain diamond. Nobody’s here, just empty space. It’s all moving, breathing. Stuck to the ceiling, don’t mean a thing.”
