Classic Toronto TV Commercials

Posted by Jerrold Litwinenko / November 11, 2007

Last December, in what can only be described as a serious fit of nostalgia, I compiled a compendium of classic Canadian TV clips from YouTube (over 40 TV show throwbacks from the 70's, 80's, and 90's).

Today I stumbled upon a YouTube user named WNED17, who has posted a series of clips from the 80's and 90's (mostly commercials and station-related programming snippets from WNED via Scarborough's Trillium Cable). There are some gems in the collections, for sure!

Here are a few that took me back (Honest Eds, African Lion Safari, Bowlerama, Hostess Potato Chips, and a Lotto 6/49 draw after the jump!)...

1) Toronto TTC Commercial (1984)

2) Honest Eds Commercial (1988)

3) African Lion Safari (1986)

4) Toronto Bowlerama Commercial (early 80's)

5) Hostess Potato Chips Commercial (1987)

6) Lotto 6/49 Draw on CFTO (1989)

Jerrold: Awesome! The TTC sure marketed itself better back in '84!

If anything these videos show how much shit news anchors have to put up with before gaining fame.

Best part of these was the preview of 'smoking in cabs' at the end of the 6/49 ad.

Whoa, that roller skating rink right after City Hall looked pretty fun, actually. It looked a lot like Robson Square in Vancouver.

Anybody know where it was?

There was a roller skating arena on Mutual St. between Shuter and Dundas on the west side. The land is now used as a playground and condominiums and housing co-ops.

The first Mutual Street Arena was the home of hockey before Maple Leaf Gardens. The United Church of Canada was formed there.

The first building was replaced in the late '60s(?) and was a curling and roller skating venue. The second building was simply called the Terrace (on Mutual). The first building was known as the Mutual Street Arena.

Only in the 80's would the procuring of rare beef be a selling point for the TTC.

I think the city required that the function of the Mutual St area be replaced by a rink under the coops between Jarvis, Dundas and George but the new rink never opened. I think it is still there today hidden in those buildings.

Wow. I still remember every note, every word, every sound of that African Lion Safari commercial from my childhood. I remember when my folks won free passes and we went on a hot summer day. The animals were sleeping -- except the monkeys. They tore the antenna and detailing off the car ;-)

Sweet find!

The clip of the roller rink is too blurry and short to tell if it's the Terrace or not, it probably is but in those days there actually were a few roller rinks in Metro, there was one near Finch and Warden somewhere.

Yes the city did require to builders of the coop to provide for a new roller rink, it added substantial cost and delay to the project that provided much needed accessible affordable housing. Mrs. Pape used to work in the building across the street and for years there was plywood hoarding proclaiming "home of the new roller rink". It was never completed and nobody cared about that style of roller skating by the time the building was opened. Now there is talk of using the space for some sort of local arts focused community center. The whole roller rink think was Jack Layton's first cause celebre, I recall him dragging his sullen teenage kids out and making them roller skate as a publicity stunt, memories of that whole thing is why this lefty still hates Jack Layton, given the choice between housing for poor disabled people and pushing a ridiculous issue to get himself in the papers he chose the latter.

The roller rink in the Toronto commercial is most likely Scarborough Rollerworld. The Terrace did not have a wood floor like the one in this commercial. Scarborough rollerworld had a wood floor and a very sophisticated sound a lighting system. It was aimed at high end roller skaters. People who would buy $600 roller skates. There were very few wooden floor roller rinks in Toronto at that time.

Interesting - I found this while looking for a classic ad - I think was from the late 1970s. I haven't found it anywhere online yet. My friend - Jon Granik - who died a few years ago - was the main guy for these ads as well as a lot of voice-over work for radio among other things. The Art Shoppe - There is only one. I believe was the motto for these ads for - well The Art Shoppe.
My spelling of Shoppe may be wrong - I am going by memory here and think it was spelled differently.

It was the Mutual Street Arena where they had roller skating, Ice Skating and Curling on Street Level. The news reel was in it's better days.

You are correct in your spelling. Located on Young St. Just south of Eglington on the East side if I am not mistaken.

It was called the Scarborough roller Rink and it had a smooth Cement floor which was coated with talc. We had to change our wheels whenever we went there or slide around like babies. LOL.

It was called the Scarborough Roller Palace and it had a cement floor with baby powder (Talc) all over it. You had to have special wheels to skate there properly. I went many times and had to change my wheels whenever I went there.

I skated there about 20 times and remember that the floor was mad of HP concrete and had talc spread all over the floor. I had to change my wheels whenever I went there. It was a small arena and hard to manouver without the change in wheels.

Wow: you were actually a cruiser there. I was very young at the time. Still live very close to there.

There was a time in Wasaga beach that there was an outdoor roller rink. The surface was bad but i did manage to get a rather large crowd out there at one time back in the 70's
It overlooked the river and everyone loved it at that time.
