Street Style: Yonge & Eglinton

Posted by Theo R / December 22, 2009

Toronto Street StyleName: Trevor
Occupation: N/A
My style: A collective of things. Mishmash.
Favourite item: My scarf, because it used to belong to my mom.

Name: Jaclyn
Occupation: Regional manager
My style: Kind of preppy, and a little bit edgy.
Favourite item: My boots, because I can wear them with anything - dress it up or dress it down. I got them at my friend's store on Queen Street.

Toronto Street StyleName: Drew
Occupation: Animation consultant
My style: Office attire.
Favourite item: My scarf. It was my granduncle's.

Names: Ashley and Kelli
Occupation (Ashley): Policy advisor
Occupation (Kelli): Accountant
My style (Ashley): Urban chic.
My style (Kelli): I think it's fashionable, and what's current.
Favourite item (Ashley): My suit. I love the colour and the cut. I think it really flatters my body type.
Favourite item (Kelli): My coat. I got it on eBay for like 30 bucks. I love it.

Toronto Street StyleName: Emilie
Occupation: Teacher
My style: My fiancé plays a big part in that. Sometimes I have problems finding pants that are long enough, or tops that fit well. A lot of what my fiancé makes for me fits me really well.
Coat: My fiancé made my coat. It has a big collar and I can hide from the wind under it.

Name: Matthew
Occupation: Consultant
My style: Scandinavian.
Favourite item: My brown leather bag.

Toronto Street StyleName: Kelly
Occupation: Project manager
My style: It really depends on my mood. I go through different phases. Probably funky, different...I'm not really sure.
Favourite item: My tights, just because they're different. I like the colours.

Name: Melissa
Occupation: Account executive
My style: Preppy, with a touch of urban and a touch of edge.
Favourite item: These Kenneth Cole boots. I got them on eBay for ½ price. They've lasted me four years, and they're still going pretty strong.

I've often wondered how us Canadians can abide all those black/grey/brown winter coats. Booooring.

Ugh. Boots, coats and scarves - what are they doing, dressing for winter in Canada? Why do you even bother trying - this pathetic town will never compare to the two weeks I spent in Milan 3 years ago! What am *I* wearing? None of your business, but I assure you that it is more stylish and fashionable then any of these losers.

Emilie's coat is great. But isn't poor Kelli a bit cold in open-toed shoes?

When people dress for warmth, it's really hard finding something that's fashion-forward.
I actually did this for my blog and it was tough.

These people aren't badly dressed, they're just plain. So putting them on a platform in the context of being stylish is a terrible thing to do and the saddest part is that Toronto has great style. You just have to know where to go to find it. BlogTo just seems to keep missing the bus... so vury sad.

BTW - I think it's funny that Emily and Matthew are basically wearing the same shoes.

Oh and blue shades Drew? No thanks.

Dark colours such as black and brown absorb heat thereby keeping you warmer. By boring I think you mean practical. Also, dark colours are better for hiding coffee spill stains!

p.s. Weather in Milan dips to a meagre -5 Celsius in winter. If our winters were that mild I bet a lot more people would be willing to sacrifice style for warmth.

Not bad at all really, and 110 times better than the Emo poseurs on Queen West.

Refreshing to see some dudes who aren't wearing skinny jeans.

Jesus....bring back glam rock, at least there was adventure and color in clothes, not to mention the fact that you had to be in shape to wear them....

I'd love to see a Street Style segment focusing on regular BlogTo commenters, but I don't need to see pasty, flabby people wearing their pajamas that badly.

In Toronto, being warm through the winter months is of the utmost importance and that does come at a price. A lot of people will just resort to a heavy Canada Goose parka... But there are many ways to stay warm and the "stylish" know how to do it with flair.

What is wrong with you people? Relax. Then maybe we can investigate why you have the best clothes out of anyone and why even people in Milan like your shoes.

that's not true.
if you take a look at sweden, russia, finland... (scandinavian countries), you'll find that they have their unique style which most would agree is fashionable. people in toronto are lazy (fleece...). they're cheap (there's no market for international designers in toronto). they have no axis of comparison (when everyone dresses like a bum, so can you).

bollocks.
i doubt canadians will consider how black absorbs heat as a factor in their color choice rather than just blindly choosing black as it goes "mediocre" with everything else they have.

hi shopsterium. i just visited your blog and made a comment. be selective! the girls you put up, one or two of them were acceptable. the rest of them spoiled it for you. less is more. find ONE stylish person per post... if you can manage in toronto.

So what other colours are you suggesting for a winter coat that will need to stand up to snow and salt stains (and the disgusting mixture of the two come March) for multiple seasons?

Can you show me pictures of these stylish Swedes and Russians wearing their technicolour dreamcoats in January?

At least I'm happy to see some adults for once. If anything BlogTO should just start taking their pics indoors.

I think that one of the main reasons that black is the most popular colour in winter coats is because coats are really expensive. Most of us only have one or two coats we wear all winter long.... day in and day out, so it makes sense to purchase something neutral that would be able to go with anything. More important than colour to me, is cut and how you wear it. I think Jaclyn looks great and so does Emilie. it's nice to see some people over 23 yrs old on here for a change!

Hey, thanks for the comments! As was suggested, the snaps will probably have to be taken indoors from now on. Malls, subway stations, etc. If you know any locations in Toronto that would be good for this, let me know (anywhere that has a lot of daylight coming in is always good). Also, if there's an area in the city (with some decent traffic) that you would like to see covered, let me know and I will see if I can hit it up.

agree with badbhoy and mn re: nice to see some people more than two years out of high school.

theo, please choose some upscale malls so we don't have to suffer the goodwill and value village crowds again.

and since when does milan get winters where they have to shovel and plow shitloads of snow? i don't think the average milanese or scandinavian wears uber fashionable clothes in winter.

Ditto the praise for Emilie's coat. Really beautiful.

Re: black/brown coat problem ... Many super-warm coats are often pricier, which means people tend to invest in a more practical colour that might not offend them a few years down the road. A lot of people also only have one coat for a set of weather conditions, and want something they can wear with everything.

Black/brown is just easier to sell -- it's not so much that more people like them, but they're less offensive to the most people. A person is more likely to have specific preferences when it comes to shades of red or blue than black or brown.

Still, I know what you all mean. I don't like wearing a black coat all the time; it's depressing. When I do buy a black coat, I choose it for cut and style and unique features, so it's a bit more jazzed up.

I wish stores sold other neutrals more often -- like light/dark grey or navy. I'm not even asking for actual colours like plaids or deep purple.

I think that the photography is even more plain than the style. I admire when someone goes out of their way to create something. It's harder to create then to criticize. But, every choice here seems arbitrary or uninformed.

Torontonians always end up shopping at the same stores, which is why there's not as great a variety of styles in this city. H&M, Zara, Winners, Urban Outfitters, AA etc. Clothes are also expensive here and we don't tend to have a lot of big sales like the US does. I hope people give more business to independent and vintage stores in the future!

The guy wearing is hood underneath the nice coat looks like he just stole the coat. He could have at least worn a hat. A hood?

@lily: You are so correct a how expensive the clothes are in Canada with little sales. All those american-owned boxstores you see town after town don't give us much choice. I sure miss Eaton's.

Part of me appreciates that I can throw on a black jacket and that's enough to blend in - esp in the winter, its so difficult to be fashion motivated when it's cold outside.

But I agree, its totally out of laziness. ...ok, I'm inspired by this post - going shopping for some stylish winter accessories.

I've spent part of every day in Manhattan for the last year, and I can say with authority that Torontonians dress with more style, boldness and diversity than New Yorkers could ever hope to. In NYC, only black is the new black, but half the people's clothing on the subway obviously came from dollar stores and K-Mart.

Matthew looks phenomenal!! Form-fitted, nicely tailored coat. Pants that are the perfect length. The splash of red on the scarf makes a subtle, yet noticeable impact. If he had on a stylish pair of sunglasses he would be perfect! The shoes are the only item, I feel that need to be improved...not bad, but they can be better!
