Street Style: Queen and Spadina

Posted by Theo R / December 15, 2009

Street Style TorontoName: Clark
Occupation: I'm sort of between jobs right now. I just graduated from university.
My style: I like to mix it up. I like to play between casual and a bit more formal.
Favourite item: I like these boots. My girlfriend found them on the side of the road and brought them and said, "Do these fit you?" And they're pretty close, anyway, so now I can wear them. I think they look awesome.
Sunglasses: I was at the Tall Ships Nova Scotia Festival in Halifax this summer, and there was a street vendor who was selling these for 15 bucks.
Interests: I like basketball. I like going to electro shows and just dancing like crazy.

Name: Zhuo
Occupation: International program co-ordinator
My style: Relaxed.
Style influences: Asian style.
Favourite item: I like these boots. They're unique. I got them from China.
Favourite place to shop: Queen Street West.
Interests: Movies. That's my favourite thing.

Street Style TorontoName: Corey
Occupation: Film student
My style: A bit of everything.
Favourite item: I love my shoes. Got these off eBay. Cheap price. Pretty cool style. Go with a lot of things.
Headphones: I just wear them because they're really loud and I don't have to hear everything else around me.
Favourite places to shop: French Connection, Value Village.
Interests: Anything film-related. Production, editing...

Name: Emily
Occupation: Theatre student
My style: The perfect mix of vintage and new styles. I like really classic items that will last forever.
Style influences: My favourite celebrities, fashion magazines, runway shows, friends.
Bag: I stole it from my roommate this morning. So, credit to her (laughs).
Interests: I like theatre. I like acting. I like the city.

Street Style TorontoName: Lacey
Occupation: Sales associate at clothing store
My style: Usually, I describe it as hobo chic.
Outfit: Mostly vintage, some American Apparel leggings, and this three-dollar sweater from Value Village.
Bag: It's from Goodwill. It was four dollars. It's really retro. It's '80s. Anything '80s, I'm in love with.
Interests: Drawing, painting, music, movies.

Name: Beth
Occupation: Art school student
My style: I've never described it before. I don't know. Every day is different.
Boots: I'm going up to Nunavut in a few hours, so I needed to wear my winter boots. I'm going there for Christmas. I'm from Nunavut.
Hat: I found it at Goodwill, and I really liked it. For Halloween, I wore it and put all these other things on it, and I was an Octopus.
Interests: I like to talk to people. I like making things. I like knitting.

Street Style TorontoName: Amy
Occupation: Shipper/receiver
My style: Whatever's comfortable, I just put on.
Favourite item: My boots, because they're new. Got them for my birthday.
Interests: Playing with my kid, playing with my dog, going for walks, reading books.

Name: Michelle
Occupation: Journalist
My style: Pretty casual and easygoing.
Favourite item: I love this jacket. I just got a good winter jacket this year. It's from the Bay, which I love.
Gloves: I made them. I'm also a crafter and knitter, so that's why I like the handmade aesthetic. They're my first pair of successfully made mittens that don't have any mistakes.
Interests: A lot of reading and writing, and biking around - just wandering around the city - and taking photographs.

not bad picks. but just typical - you can find at least 10 other people dressed like them within 1 block.

I really like Clark's look except for that style of jeans, which I guess is pretty in right now. He looks fashionable but not ridiculous.

Any chance we might eventually get to see some adults in nice clothes intead of a dude who found boots on the side of the road?

Clark, Corey, Beth and Michelle all stand out to me this week. Very stylish without seeming to be trying too hard. Everyone else looks good too.... and it's hard to keep outdoor styles fresh in the winter. Winter coats and thick boots don't leave a lot of room for creativity. I know when I am getting dressed to face the chilly outdoors, keeping warm is my number one priority! So props to all of you who are making it work.
Glad to see it's not all students this week! Maybe soon... people over 30 years old!

Alright, normally I'm anti-snark, but this one is really trying. Zhuo should not have agreed to be photographed for a style page after leaving the house in that! Beth, Amy, Michelle? Just say 'no, don't take my picture I don't look good today.' To focus on the positives, Corey and Clark look pretty sharp.

Great looks for this week! I love that nobody looks like they crawled out of the car they live in and picked their clothes from Goodwill's dumpsters.

I love Amy. She looks like she got dressed like someone who doesn't expect to get photographed by The Sartorialist/Tommy Ton while walking down the street.

My partner and I are constantly putting shit out on the sidewalk in front of our downtown house that we don't want anymore. It's typically gone within a couple hours. I'm happy to see an actual recipient of some such sidewalk trash!

Nothing says "fashion" like wearing "vintage" that sat in somebody's basement for 15 years before they finally decided it was ugly and got rid of it. Good thing there are lots of students out there pursuing degrees of questionable value that enjoy other people's garbage.

Why hate on the free boots? Does the two dollars you'd pay for them at Goodwill make them acceptably cool?

I'm new to town and obviously missing the point of this street style thing. All I see are eight 20-somethings in jeans and boots, not bad at all, but not (forgive me) stylish.

Blech. Typical Queen West grunge/hobo/squeegee kid looks. Beth is the only stand-out. Helps that she looks friendly in the picture.

I really think you're gonna have a harder time of it finding examples of identifiably decent style in the wintertime. Outerwear / boots / mittens typically only gives you so much to go on, you know?
I'd rather you guys ran a smaller section with the most interesting people you could find instead of just finding eight okay-looking outfits to fill a quota and then diving inside for warmth.

Normal people?

"I'm sort of between jobs right now, but I go on vacation to Halifax and party all the time."

"My style: The perfect..."

"I'm going to Nunavut in a few hours."

Yup - just your regular Joes! Oy vey. Here is my entry (picture not available):

Name: Steve
Occupation: Something that earns about $20/year, but that people would really love doing if they didn't have to earn an income.
My style: It's really obscure and you probably wouldn't understand it.
Favorite item: Some homeless guy paid ME twenty bucks to take his boots. I am the absolute-zero of cheap-cool.
Interests: I like odds, ends, stuff and things, but most of all I'm interested in saying things that define my image.

In summary, while I love diversity, people need to find real meaning in their lives - the clothing reviewed in these articles are the least fabricated parts of the articles.
Sokhorn / December 15, 2009 at 11:19 pm

I really don't know why all the negative feedback, especially towards Clark. His outfit is really working well together, especially with his tall height. Look at the contrasting sleeve lengths, the subtle use of accessories and patterns that break up solids of muted Earthy tones. The first four really brought it, I don't know what you are all bitching over. If you expect couture street style, go to Sartorialist, but obviously the trend here has been to show 'realist' style for young adults.

Another note: If these are 'run of the mill, typical hipster looks' that you can see anywhere, how come it takes a specific street to see these? Or, why is it you go to other streets and you see other styles that people won't give as many snide and negative feedback to? It's all in the diversity, and there is nothing wrong with that.

A little sanctimonious, no? You're judging people on like seventeen words. Not everyone's going to spill their hearts out to a blogger taking their picture on the street.

What's wrong with the degrees/education that some of these individuals are pursuing? What's it to you anyway? Are you paying for their student loans? Didn't think so! You sound like a bitter parent...

Really? Clark stands out? the only standing out he does should be at the job bank, He is a carbon copy of every other 'unique style' hipster you see 500X a day.

Amy, I like hobo chic, but late 20's mom chic? really we have to be stretching to justify her look as stylish, functionality is a nice way to put her taste, bland and broad in a not so nice way

You obviously misunderstood what they meant by "degrees". It's part of a subordinate clause, "degrees of questionable value". And I agree with what they say.

If Street Style follows its present trend, the next blog will feature fashion mavens amongst the homeless. Found these boots at the side of the road??? Goodwill hunting for hats??? Please, blogTO, pick yourself up out of the gutter and focus your lenses a little higher.

This is what I read:

"Good thing there are lots of students out there pursuing degrees of questionable value that enjoy other people's garbage."

A straightforward comment if you ask me...no reason to force myself to read between the lines. There is no subliminal message!

I feel as Canadians we are entitled to some lee-way in the coolish winter months not really an issue in Paris or Milan, even New York, and I think all of these people dance between fashion and function well. With the footwear on display I think we see how this can be done well.

Some of the fits of things leave stuff to be desired, but I am picky about that.

Clark- best dressed 'asshole' at the UKC for 4 years. Ill be blasting it over our eastgottigeneaster electro speakers you westqueenwester.

I don't mean to disrespect any of the people in these photos, but BlogTo... you NEED to get a stylist who knows what's up to tag along with the photographer. These people are just regular people... and considering that it's Spadina/Queen... C'Mon, this is pathetic.

With Greg on this... please make some effort to make this column a column worth reading.

Starting to think that you just post a sign that says "Hey! Wanna be on BlogTO? Line up here to have your photo taken!"

Spend more than 30 minutes shooting next time, and please, take a stylist with you.

Personally, I don't like either of these guy's outfit. I think they're outfits are a bit tacky, and very much look like they found all their clothes. Could you start getting guys who look MASCULINE while being well-dressed, instead of most the man-ladies on this blog? Also, almost every guy you post is wearing skinny jeans, they are so tired. Do you just photograph the first man-lady you see?
