Street Style: Black, Tights and a Bit of Colour

Posted by Jonathan Loek / November 17, 2009

Light jackets and even heavier winter coats are a common sight on the streets of Toronto these days. Black is still the over-riding theme, cropping up this week in everything from leather pants to hats to driving gloves. It's always nice though to see an outfit accented with a bit of colour.

The similarity between the fashion on the people chosen for the photographs and the people in the American Apparel banner ads around this article is uncanny.

Try no tights next round, maybe some people who like food too?

I'd like to see working class slobs featured in this blog. Where are all the unsuccessful losers with fashion sense?

I agree with gr1, Kate n Tyler champion this round. Don't want to be a hater but shiny legged Nevada... Ryan looks like one of my high school french teachers.. Trish is just scary..yikes... All round nice collection we've got here! @GoatTO: aren't these working class slobs? I'd say Kate being a model is the closest thing to a fashionista-varient

You don't understand. It's her job *not* to.

Her crotch is crazy crazy high though. Wow.

kate, tyler are winners for me. keith is pretty alright (i like his sweater and the fact that his jeans ain't too skinny), and phoebe looks pretty interesting.

Phoebe's stance is reminding me of a deer. But her look is interesting. I also like Keith. He looks laid back and cozy. Kate looks beautiful but her dress is so short that as a female I am concerned with what happens when she sits down.

Is there anyone larger than a size XS or S on the blogTO's street style? Just wondering...

Only the bartender and paralegal qualify as working-class slobs...the rest of them are work in creative fields or are students--some creative, others unknown. No economics, engineering, or accounting students, you'll note.

And yes, you can argue that naturally, creative professionals are more likely to have style. BUT--there are stylishly dressed accountants (I used to work with one), school teachers, and bank tellers. It's just BlogTO tends to look for subjects in the arty/studenty part of town.

See, I think Kate's body proportions look off in that outfit. I'm sure she could do better, unless it's just a bad shot.

Also, far be it from me to defend the skeleton parade I've tended to see in these features, but Stephanie seems to be a bit more normal-sized, doesn't she? I like the colour of her tights, too, and she is wearing something over them!

I'm very confused by Phoebe. Very. And Laura's wearing peep toes in November -- really? Girls are so silly sometimes.

Elle Driver In replying to a comment from S. / November 17, 2009 at 2:56 PM

Yes there has been, but it's usually accompanied by thoughtful comments about how fat they are, their legs are too thick, or how they're not skinny enough to pull it off. It's a lose-lose situation.

Gloria In replying to a comment from JP / November 17, 2009 at 3:07 PM

JP, I don't know about you, but I don't know many "working class" accountants and bank tellers. They're the ones making the big bucks.

And hell, aren't actors and artists some of the poorer demographics?

Gloria In replying to a comment from Elle Driver / November 17, 2009 at 3:09 PM
user-pic

Yeah ... I still remember arguing in one of the first instalments over what is "fat" is, as one of the commentators thought being thin was the main qualification for looking good in clothes. Forget taste or fit!

Hilary / November 17, 2009 at 3:12 PM

What do you expect when you choose people with such diverse lives - their outfits reflect their ages, occupations and budgets! Yes, Kate could pack on a few kilos but you know what else? Laura, your peep toes are just fine in November if there is no snow! Maybe you could do another photo shoot of them all again once there is 2m of snow on the ground and it is -20C!

Gloria, you're quite right, I was conflating working class with non-creative, but they're not at all the same thing. So I take your point about using accountants as an example.

However, bank tellers do **not** make big bucks. Don't you remember the kerfuffle involving CIBC and one of its bank tellers who launched a lawsuit because of all the unpaid overtime she was forced to work? Being a bank teller is a drudge job.

OK, so tellers make more than a retail clerk, but believe me, they're working schlubs, not fabulously well-to-do.

"Black is still the over-riding theme" - Yes, black is the over-riding theme for those who vehemently follow the silly fashion trends. Those with true style can use other neutrals and colour without fear, and always look much better dressed.

Ok, that's fair. I can't generalize, since I was just going on my discussions with a couple of people at my work who used to work at a bank, where they got crazy perks. I guess that isn't "rich" though.

Tights! On women whose knees are bigger around than their thighs!

Ugh. Send them back to the mothership, please. There are lots of creative stylish dresssers out there, or at least those that don't blindly follow fashion trends that don't suit their body type.

Maybe you should create a article/venue for the commenters to submit style shots from Toronto over the long term, see if the loudmouth critics have any actual substance behind their words.

Just because you are size 16 doesn't mean that every other girl needs to be that size. I think Kate looks good and not skinny.

We need more Clea and Trish body types, but those other skiiiinnny legs look so unappealing - borderline scary. this is not a good look ladies. Im also not impressed at all with the styles, Phoebe's outfit is really bad, and tights are so over, lets move on.

Some comment-leaving people seem unclear on the ethical difference between critiquing the photographer's choice of body types to profile or critiquing the fashion choices of those featured, and insulting people for the bodies that they possess.

Kate & Phoebe make me feel sick. I am going to go cook up some greasy fries.

Besides that, some good choices, Tyler and Kurt especially have a nice, clean look to them. Where can one find an airplane sweater! Trish has some amazing boots also.

Just wondering....

I thought T.O. was a "multicultural" diverse city....
strange enough..i don't see much diversity here(style or cultural)

I don't think everyone is into the skinny jeans

And I don't think it's right to poke fun at people in the picture either... put yourself in their shoes. How would you feel to be made fun of by random people just for being yourself?

Only Know What I See / November 18, 2009 at 11:37 AM

Tyler and Kurt both get my thumbs-up vote - fashionably understated but dressed for any occasion.
Just a thought - with Kate seemingly very tall & model-esque, you shouldn't take a shot from the ground up. Makes her legs and body structure look weird although I know they aren't in the least.

this is my favourite section of Blog TO. Thank you for continuing this despite so many negative comments!
FYI - Much Music VJ Sarah Taylor (I think that's her last name) made it onto the Sartorialist and she looks great!

Most of these people are butter faces and personally, I find most of the outfits tacky. Like "Keith" honestly, this is fasionable? For real? Also, skinny pants are over for guys, the fad has been around for too long now, they look so gross and feminine in them. YUCK. Can you post a guy that looks like one??
