Street Style: Queen and Spadina

Posted by Jonathan Loek / August 19, 2009

It's officially blazing outside and I'm loving every second of it. This week I took a stroll up Spadina and a ride across Queen to see who I could bump into.

Hannah and SassName: Hannah aka Hannah Banana
Expertise: Bartender/ Photographer

I bumped into to Hannah on Queen St. earlier in the week on my ride to work. She had also just ridden to work and we were both feeling the effects of the heat. Check out some more of her pics on lookbook.

Name: Sass
Expertise: Blogging
Blog: zucket.com

I saw Sass yesterday on Spadina, she had just got off her bike and was going to get some dinner and some brews.

Farhia and MichaelName: Farhia aka Free
Expertise: Student - International Development

Free was just on a break from work when I spotted her at Queen and Spadina. I really like her fro.

Name: Michael
Expertise: Student

Michael was also lingering around Queen and Spadina. When he grows up he wants to open a high-end menswear shop in Toronto.

Ghie and JenniferName: Ghie
Expertise: Designer

I came across Ghie in Chinatown. She's from Japan and was just out for a little stroll.

Name: Jennifer
Expertise: Buyer

Jennifer was walking down Spadina on her way to a BBQ last night. She is originally from Newfoundland.

Did that chick lie down in the middle of the street? Brave, especially after the garbage strike has left things less than sanitary.

Uh, Free is wearing pants from an Indian Salwar. That's just kinda weird. I like Jennifer's dress, although she's not from Toronto.

Well, I ACTUALLY really like and enjoy this segment of BlogTO, hardly 'retarded' as someone above belittled.
Keep up the good work!

LOL. the only retard here is the one who calls himself/herself "wizard of ossington". meh. doesn't the ossington crowd know they really aren't that "hip"?!

blogTO: i like these profiles. good to see some effort made on spotlighting some real, everyday people.

This series is absolutely atrocious. Please cancel or make serious improvements ASAP. Far more stylish people walk our city's streets, but only dowdy, K-mart shoppers seem to have been featured so far. It is reasons like this why Toronto has a reputation as a provincial, back-water fashion town. You should be ashamed.

Great blog, this looks like a true representation of street style that we see in the dot everyday. Seems that some people have unrealistic expectations as to what should be considered street style. Way to keep it real.

That's because no one on Ossington is from Toronto. I did a survey once. It's funny how there are so many ex-pats in this city. And the smalltowners.

I have to say i like Ghie's look the best. She looks natural, comfortable, and no ego. Ghie FTW! haha

And to Sunny Fong: NO ONE on Ossington is from Toronto?? I find that quite odd. Toronto is a big city, and if you were to take a survey in any given area, I am sure that you would find people who weren't born here but moved here, as well as people just visiting. I wonder how thorough this survey of yours was.

When did you do this survey, Sunny? Ossington is crawling with 905ers on weekends. Try your little survey on a Tuesday.

Are you sure that young lady from Japan's name is "Ghie"? I've never heard that before, although "Chie", with a "C" is a very common name among Japanese women.

You aren't the Satorialist, that includes you Sunny Fong; self proclaimed "fashionister". Deflate the ego and take a step back gentlemen.

Whether these fashions make you think of KMart or not, you'd never see them in the 'burbs' because they just don't seem to have the imagination to pull the pieces together. THAT'S what makes them Toronto fashion types - creative without hundreds of dollars to shop at Holtz or wherever you think "far more stylish" people shop. A walk down Toronto streets is so refreshing for the variety of styles.

I'm sorry but I'm gonna have to disagree. Where is the creativity in buying an orange dress and wearing it as is? Anyone can walk into French Connection or whatever knock off store is now selling that dress and look the same. Sure, for some of the other people photographed, i.e. Hannah and Michael, at least you can see that they put some thought and used some personal style to put together their outfits. Sass? Not so much. Cool picture, but that's about it.

The survey was pretty thorough actually. I had consultants work with me from the Urban Planning Association. I also asked Public Interest to assist in accessing community pockets. We also did various sub-surveys, detailing the proportion of Cheap Monday jeans vs. full-time employment. Maybe BlogTO would like to run our findings once it's all tabulated?

I'm actually so embarrassed because it's such a stupid name.
It's a play on "fashionista." I'm a fashionista... with ass around my hair.

a city can not look retarded. using language that demeans people with special needs is not only unnecessary, it's downright ignorant.
ugh.

Did anyone else check out Sass' blog? I kinda feel sorry for her -- desperate for the limelight, writing about guys she's fucking and then wondering why it doesn't work out... yikes.

Anyways, to each their own, she's hilarious.

Why do my non-profane comments get deleted but someone who uses "retard" doesn't get deleted? As a social worker who works with the differently-abled, that was in poor taste Truth. You should keep that stuff to conversations with your friends. I use the n-word all the time but I mean, only when I want to offend someone. I don't think that was your intention. Try calling amateur photographers "wannabe art school fruits." That's a little better.

And thanks Monty. I feed off the recognition and attention from strangers.
