Designer Files: Caroline Lim

Caroline Lim is the brains behind Kity Clothing. This former Ryerson grad has won many awards on the national and international level. I even watched her on the Making it Big reality show. She continued her winning streak on that show also. Kity is available at Sense of Independance and Pho Pa in Toronto. Fans across Canada and on the internet can also get their hands on her designs. Caroline graciously answered some questions I had for her.

How did you get into fashion?
I knew ever since grade 2 that I would be a designer. I've got the "when I grow up, I want to be...poster" to prove it!

When did you start sewing?
I started sewing officially the last year of high school. First project: Prom dress. Yikes!

Why did you decide to attend school for fashion design?
1. My parents would have freaked if I didn't
2. my prom dress sewing wasn't cutting it.

What are you inspired by?
*pretty, perky, party personalities

Do you have a design philosophy?
Always keeping with the playful and provacative trademark of Kity while mixing small elements of design from past era's, creating pieces for the super confident & girlly woman!

What's your favourite material(s) to work with?
Anything that snuggles the curves....

Describe your collection/clothing?
Kity is about creating the perfect balance of adorable and sexy for the simply Delicious!

How did you choose the name of your company?
It actually chose me...Kity was my nick name throughout highschool. But, I just thought...Kity hmm...sexy and cute!

How important is the internet to your business? Do many customer's discover about Kity through the web?
Love love love the internet! The Latest collection, past seasons, and Kity updates...check it out www.kityclothing.com! Also, I gotta say, I've got some amazing online retailers: www.paper-doll.com. & www.mudsharkstreetwear.com.

What is your favourite movie(s) in terms of costume design?
Moulin Rouge all the way!!!

How many sewing machines do you have?
Four...why? You wanna come sew for me anyone???

What's your definition of style?
Style is really about OWNING IT! Anything can make sense, come to life and look HOT if you Work it!

Do you think of yourself as stylish?
(Going along with my prior answer)...I may be a designer, but I'm still a girl and I've got my yukky days too...so sometimes I want to scream from a mountain "LOOK AT ME!! I'm FABULOUS!" and sometimes I just want to crawl under a rock and pray no one finds me...

Do you have a muse?
Joe...my beau and local Toronto Illustrator. His crazy creative mind simply put...stuns me everyday. xoxo pumpkin!
