Optic Zone

Optic ZoneOptic Zone is Joe Singh's dizzying jumble of a shop near the foot of Jarvis. It can be a bit overwhelming. "We carry everything," he insists, and he might be right, with an inventory featuring labels like J.F. Rey, Tom Ford and Funk Royal, and prices from $150 to $1600.

Joe's committment to service - during the buying process and well after - is unparalleled. I won't buy glasses anywhere else.
Colin / December 18, 2009 at 09:01 am
I buy every pair of glasses at Optic Zone and Joe has never let me down. It is amazing that when I describe to him what I'm looking for I usually end up buying one of the first 3 pairs he selects! Top notch.
Jessica / March 1, 2010 at 07:42 pm
Joe is awesome! He found a variety of frames for me to try on and every pair (all very different) were amazing. I ended up getting an awesome pair of frames and I honestly can't wait to pick up another pair this year!

it is a complete mess in there. I find it hard to find anything. Someone should really work on getting that place cleaned up.
John / January 23, 2011 at 08:12 pm
I gave up on these folks. It's true, they have a huge selection, and they make some decent suggestions. They're nice enough, I suppose (although I did find Joe a tad arrogant). But don't expect them to go too far out of their way to help you. I ordered a frame in another colour. They kept saying they'd call when it came in. I checked back at least two or three times and no sign of the frame. I eventually grew tired of the waiting game (and never did hear back). On the other hand, I was generally delighted with the service at Specs & Specs on Queen W.

I agree with John. My daughter and I both need glasses and so went to Optic Zone to look. There was an Oliver Peoples frame we wanted to see and Joe said he would order it in and call us later that day or the next. Couple of days later I called to see what was happening and he gave some excuse but didn't have it yet, he would call. That was about 3 weeks ago and we never heard a word from him. Seems to me that as the shop is such a mess, that’s indicative as to how the business is run.
Lauren Wilson / April 13, 2011 at 11:18 am
I experienced the worst service at Optic Zone. Joe promised me that my Oliver Peoples glasses would be specially ordered and would take 2 weeks. I waited a month only to hear that instead of my glasses being shipped, he had ordered a box of sunglasses. He was arrogant throughout the entire process and unapologetic. I have now wasted an entire month waiting for these glasses. I am going to tell everyone I know to stay clear of Optic Zone and go somewhere else. Joe needs to learn how to be organized and how to respect his clients
Lorraine B / April 13, 2011 at 11:30 am
DO NOT GO TO OPTIC ZONE! Joe is disorganized and will string you along even though he knows he won't be able to deliver. He kept lying to me about the products arrival and in the end they never came. PLEASE save yourself a lot of stress and go somewhere else to buy your glasses. Joe is a complete waste of time.

Joe has been my 'go-to' guy for almost 20 years. He has an unbelievable ability to find the frame that's right. He knows my taste, me pushes my comfort boundaries and I'm always glad he did. And most importantly he always gives me an honest opinion. He's knowledgeable, he's a gent, he has an unbelievable selection, and he gives me advice that I trust. Can't say enough positive things. Thank you Joe, for making me love wearing glasses! ~ heidi

This place is not one of those "boutique" optometrists with shiny windows and pretentiously little selections. I guess you have to like what they can offer (amazingly eclectic selections! and honest opinions) but I've had really positive experiences so I keep coming back to Joe. If you agree with those who rant here about the "lack" of services, you may want to look elsewhere (but it's your loss!). But if you're damn serious about what you want for your eyewear, this place is a gem for you.

I like this place.
Timo Ramoan / November 9, 2011 at 05:18 pm

Yes its a little messy and yes they are often busy, but if you are patient Joe WILL find you the best frames to suit you.
Every time I've gone he's running around, he'll greet me with a couple questions and hand me a frame and then back to other customers before me. Once my turn comes up he'll offer a ton of great frames, and usually the very newest styles and all looking great. And it just happens that EVERY TIME I've gone, the FIRST pair he hands me is the one I walk out with!!!

He will find the BEST looking frames for you. I'm very confident in his services.

I've been going to joe for years and he's always very helpful. I've never been disappointed and my frames last for years. They need better mirrors and it does take time to go through their selection but I'd prefer a large and good selection to a small one. I'm a fan. my sis just bought two glasses from them as well and thought the service was great.

update from above post: When I went in to optic zone a couple of weeks ago I couldn't find a pair of glasses so checked out about 6 diff places including most on the "TO blog best of" list. None compared in any way to Optic zone. None came close to the selection, the service or the price of Optic Zone. I returned and Joe got in a pair that very day that were perfect for me and pulled them out as soon as I walked in. He really took the time to understand what I am looking for and assist in finding the best frames for me - (he in no way was trying to sell me the most expensive pair). When I went in to the other stores, the salespeople didn't know any of the things Joe informed me of in regards to my prescription either. The other woman in Optic Zone was extremely helpful as well and helped find me a perfect pair of sunglasses so I left a happy camper with two pairs of glasses. I will remain loyal to Optic Zone for sure!

I've been getting my glasses at Optic Zone for be past 10 years. Joe always pushes me just enough to try something new and is spot-on EVERY time. And did I mention that, even if I haven't been in his shop for a year, he remembers my name? Joe is the greatest and most opinionated optician I know - and his opinions are smart and right.
Andread / March 8, 2013 at 04:03 pm
great service and choice, have recommended the place to many
Andrea / March 13, 2013 at 02:27 pm
There are pros and cons to every retailer. Let me give it to you straight:

- Uneatable prices (I ordered a pair of Chanel frames once that would have set me back $750 at three other optical stores where I got quotes. My price at Optic Zone? $350). Joe has also always given me a great deal when I've bought more than one pair at a time, always fitting them into what I have available from insurance
- Unparalleled understanding of face shape and bone structure; Joe and his team will have you trying on glasses you never would have picked for yourself. Trust them
- Laid-back attitude. Want to be there for 10 mins? Fine. Two hours? Fine. I once spent two hours there when I was shopping for new eyeglasses and sunglasses. The staff weren't impatient or annoyed with me, and continued bringing me choice after choice until I was happy. Just yesterday, I needed new eyeglasses again and I wasn't there 10 minutes before one of Joe's employees picked out a pair of glasses that were so amazing I decided to stop looking
- Quick turnaround: You'll have your new glasses inside of a week, maybe within days depending on how busy they are

- Parking is a bloody nightmare around the store; take transit if you can
- Hours can be wonky; sometimes they just shut down for a week and sometimes are closed certain weekends. It seems unpredictable at best
- The store is a bit of a disaster. Aside from the high-end frames that grace the well-lit and nicely displayed walls, how any order is processed in this place on time and correctly is beyond me because there are papers EVERYWHERE and orders are basically bound with elastic bands to glasses cases; it's obviously not impacting their ability to do good work but it would go a long way for customers on the fence about this place to clean it up. Optics for the Optic Zone!

If you're looking for a place where you'll be served champagne and crumpets while being waited on - this ain't it. But if you want fashion-forward frames at the best prices in the city, go to Optic Zone.

Wow such a nice guy. I went in well after closing time (clients still browsing) bc my glasses needed tightening and he took me in. So sweet and made them even more fitting than when I initially got them. Great service and humble. Def will come back when I need to buy new glasses. His expertise is unparallel.

I require glasses to improve my sight. Perhaps the negative comments on here are from only individuals who are bossy and get less service everywhere they go, thanks to my glasses I have observed you snapping your fingers at all stores. Parking is busy in downtown, don't blame the stores, blame yourself for being silly. I tell everyone to get wonderful glasses here. It is the best quality and beautiful frames I have ever owned and the best quality match to my lenses, also best fit to my face, thanks to Optic Zone I am cute. All staff are great, respectful, friendly, thoughtful, skillful, patient, helpful and clean. I don't have a problem with the style of the store that other customers have posted here. I think the style means that they are busy working and skilled at what they do. I would say that they are a productive studio style where you can find creative products. If you prefer to walk into a bright empty store then you may enjoy shopping in other overly lit staged venues that want to sell you garbage that will make you regret your purchase because you will always have a headache from the bad fit also I find other stores just not clean. I like Joe as he is skillful, careful, and considerate. I like stores and services where the owner is present as it makes all the difference. Many places in the area have changed and have staff that are only clocking in time. This service is professional and I hope they are there for a long time. Soon I will move out of the city I will always return here when I need a new pair of glasses. I wish them all the best for the New Year and Thank You for staying in the neighbourhood. Thank you.

Optic Zone is so legit.

Joe is a master at choosing frames and I've been using him for 10 years. Like others have said, he sells high end frames at a discount. While his prices are higher than a chain like Lenscrafters etc, they are much lower than at a boutique. Generally, $300-400 is the range.

I've been going to The Optic Zone for over 24 years. This place is a gem in the City for any kind of eye-wear regardless of the price point. Yes, the business has outgrown the space ... It's pretty crowded and space is at a premium BUT the pro is the intimacy of knowing everyone by their first name and getting excellent customer service.

The owner Joe Singh is a "gentle giant" who is spot on with his selection of my eye-wear within minutes of my entry into the store. I very seldom buy less than 2 pairs on each visit.

Joe recently took a well earned vacation with his family to China etc and his staff were just as professional as if he was there .... great job guys!!!

I highly recommend The Optic Zone for the following reasons:
2. Excellent Customer Service by Joe Singh & his friendly, knowledgeable staff
3. Great selection/variety of eye-wear including all brand names/designers
4. Excellent prices ...

I have been getting my glasses from Optic Zone for about 10 years. Joe has always been very patient with me and is incredibly helpful. He just seems to know what to pick for me. I agree that he will push to get you just a touch out of your comfort zone but is always spot on in his choices. I have a pair of Prada sunglasses that Joe picked out for me 5 years ago that are prescription lenses. I love the frames so much I had him put in new prescription glass into the frames last year. I have stopped counting the number of people who have told me how much they love the sunglasses including complete strangers on the street.

Joe is completely spot on with picking out the right pair of glasses. After delaying and denying myself I've needed a pair, I finally got the gumption to fill my prescription. Not knowing where to start to even go in Toronto, I hit up Google and found Optic Zone. Let me confirm that going in there was bang on advice many have indicated. The first pair of frames, Joe put on me were the ones I bought. He's talented and knowledgeable. So many compliments on my new frames. Love them! Yes the store is a bit busy with frames everywhere, but I'm there for great service, quality frames and lenses. Stephanie helped me after Joe put the frames on and she was fantastic as well. Highly recommend them. I picked up my frames a week later and I can see! HOORAY!
