Coupe Bizzarre

Posted by Catherine / Posted on November 10, 2008

Coupe BizzarreMontreal/Toronto studio Coupe Bizzarre sits on Queen St W split between #704 and #710. Which might mean a quick game of "where's my hair stylist today", but they're a talented team and worth finding.

one word.. pretentious.. Any salon that puts their receptionist in a saucer is not my kind of place. Next time, please don't eyeball my outfit as I walk in and judge me before I open my mouth. Thanks. Yes, I am the one that walked in , then walked right out

i love waht they did to my hair it was great, maybe some people don't like what they do with there hair but i luv it , it's called style! i love the service they call you by your first name and they always try to have a conversation, i love the way marcus and mandy work, i'm happy my godmother took me here but i wanted to know how much a haircut is ... hmm..
coupe bizzarre team / March 19, 2009 at 09:43 pm
do we have to mention that you obsessively called the salon, called a few members of the staff by insulting names, and you tried to get an adjustment for your cut a month after you had it done???? not to forget you were 30 minutes late for it and we took you anyways... (we usually dont accept people if they re 20 minutes late) and you asked if someone could call your lunch appointment? and said the haircut took 2h30 when it took an hour to the most..
i wonder who is not to be recommended...!
we are hairstylist, talented and human.
thank you!

I'll admit it. I've been a Coupe whore for quite a few years now. My love affair started in high school when I had a cute cheerleader bob complete with bangs by Larry. I wasn't too enthused with his work so I let it grow out and then tried Sarah. She gave me an undercut which I wasn't crazy about. Then I finally found Isabell, whom I adored but after a few cuts with her talented hands she left me for Vidal. I was heartbroken. I refused to follow her due to the ridiculous price points at Vidal. As a student I was poor.(Actually I still am.) Then a friend recommended that I go to Donna. She's amazing, love, love, love her work. I have never been dissatisfied with anything she's done. And neither has my hair. For anyone who's read this, she's the best they've got!
Krista / April 2, 2009 at 10:41 pm
I used to go get my hair cut by Brionie. When I called to book an appointment they told me she'd left and won't tell me if she's still cutting hair.
Does anyone know if she's still cutting? I've had other cuts at coupe but she was the best!

When your hair is thin and fine like mine, you cherish every strand and are extreeeemely careful about who cuts your precious hair. I think Shawna has the magic touch. Coupe Bizarre, 704 Queen St. W. She suggests the best cut but always gives me what I ask for and doesn't cut too much off. Love that girl! Love the cuts! Finally a stylist that cares as much about my hair as I do.

thanx for the compliment. i am now working at Brennen Demelo at 316 Adelaide west. 416-301-1072 ask for me!

I love the way Adam cuts my hair! I will go back every three months. This place rocks!!

Thank God for blogs... I wouldn't have known where to find you Shawna! Are you at the Chop Shop?
Jennifer / May 14, 2009 at 11:57 am
Vince has never let me down. In fact, he is cutting my hair today. That said, you don't want to be my age (over fifty) unless you're prepared to be annoyed by some of the calculated indifference, the preciousness, and that god-awful endless thumping they call music.
Blackwidow / May 23, 2009 at 09:04 am
I have really come to dislike this salon. Have gone many times to get my haircut there, and it is hit and miss. Even by the same stylist (have only tried 2), I think it depends on her mood as to whether or not I got a good cut. There is no way I could go anywhere after leaving there, other than home, because they don't clean the hair from my face and often it isn't even styled. I haven't gone back in quite some time, and don't intend to.

And agree, the music is awful.
bb replying to a comment from jake dallas / May 24, 2009 at 12:44 pm
I'd try the Brennen Demelo salon on Adelaide... a couple of blocks east of Spadina. I'm a chic but my style is similar and the new girl with long blonde hair (name?) got it right for me last week!
bitchola replying to a comment from Blackwidow / May 24, 2009 at 12:51 pm
to Blackwidow...

That's exactly why I like brennen demelo... you don't have to tolerate the nasty vibe —neither attitude nor music. I like a little respect and think I deserve it ;) and... the shops are awesome 2 blocks up on Queen/Spadina... I got the best deals on cute cute stuff cause the shops will lower prices if you ask!!! unbelievable!
bitchola replying to a comment from shawna / May 24, 2009 at 12:58 pm
I'll ask for you too Shawna... I have the same issues... they always want to do what they want and disapprove when I tell them what I want. The last thing I want is to piss them off and risk an oopsie with the scissors. That's not fun! AND I get even MORE attitude for the next hour while I struggle to make nice. enuff o' that shit
cattattack / June 13, 2009 at 12:17 pm
I'll be honest, I'm going there today and I'm shitting my pants.
Sort of torn between all of your oppinions here.
I've wanted to cut my hair short for ages, and I've gone back to get it fixed a couple of times.
I hope it doesn't get fucked. I don't know who I'm going to, as in which stylist, and I don't want my mother to die of an early heart attack.
-sigh- oh shit.

If you have CURLY hair, you know how a bad haircut is devastating! Curly hair takes SO long to grow out and cutting it the way you cut straight hair just doesn't make sense. NICOLE is fantastic and knows exactly what to do with curly hair - she cuts your hair when it's dry so she knows how your curls fall and how much they shrink (from wet to dry). She is so careful and I always feel like a pin-up girl when I leave her/there! For BEST results, style your hair as you normally would (leave it down, of course). She will be able to work with a style that is manageable to you if you do this. Thanks Nicole!

worst hair cut in years.
wurdup / July 20, 2009 at 10:18 pm
went to coupe (after hearing it was THE spot in the west to get yer hair did) on a Friday night. Got a good cut...however...there was no hair washing involved, none what so hair was dirrrty. So I proceeded to go home...wash and re-style my hair, then went out. A little ridiculous when you are short for time and are paying 55-70 bucks for a 'hair experience'.
CC / July 21, 2009 at 02:26 pm
I tried Coupe because of it being rated in the top 10 salons in TO. I was unsure of what to expect because of some reviews posted here.
However, my cut is fantastic and my colour is great. I have to add, I chose Coupe to fix a highlighting slop job I had done at a very well known Yorkville salon (master colour tech too!).
So, to get a great haircut according to what you want, honest consultation and dead on colour, I recommend Coupe.

hey folks..(everyone)..thanx for all the feed-back...almost seems like i started a bit of a "war" "war"...maybe the answer i was looking for????...maybe you can't say a salon is great..or horrible..but rather the "stylists"(specifically)...i guess it's a hit and miss deal...i still haven't cut the hair...but from what i'm reading/viewing in's a "hippie"-like summer anyways....hey..anyone get their hair cut bt Marco coi( this a proper medium to be asking this question..all apologies..if i'm out of line..asking this question on a coupe bizarre "site" does...grow back...we've all been through bad experiences no doubt at a great summer everyone...i guess the safest option is..."let it grow..and grow..."(i.e robert plant...sebastian bach)....rock'n'roll....!!!!!!!!!
May / July 24, 2009 at 09:23 pm
Horrible. Do not go here for colour. Went there once, asked the guy to do natural highlights for my hair. I have med-dark brown hair. I did NOT mention the word blonde to him~ I told him I would be happy with a caramel brown colour highlight only a few shades lighter than my natural hair colour. I told him that I HATE high contrast, I was going for subtlety and shimmer. He seemed to understand what I was talking about. An hour later, I had dark brown hair with white- blonde highlights. It looked horrible.

A few months later I decided to try out highlights again. Someone had mentioned to me that they went to Coupe Bizarre and got great colour. Her hair looked subtle so I trusted and thought I would give it another chance. Called them to make an appoint, when I called, just to be sure, I said, "Can the stylist do subtle, natural looking highlights?" The person on the phone said yes.

Lo and behold...... SAME thing happens to me AGAIN!! Will never go here again. I guess if you want like blue or red hair, they are the place for you, but if you want elegant, natural looking colour, save your money!!

Ps. They are way expensive, on top of it all!!

A friend of mine who lives in the east end has been going there for 10 years, to Amy. She recommended her, even though I would also have to schlep across the city to get there. It was worth the trip. Amy was excellent. Yes, the couches are hardly sink-in comfortable, and the decor is a bit of pretension mixed with a fashion-conscious star trek set gone wrong, but the receptionist was friendly, and Amy was super. I went to her, happily paying what she charged (I can't remember now), until I moved out of the city. I'm still thinking of her, and wondering if I should drive in 100km just to have her cut my hair again!

My daughter saved her money for months for a cut and color here only to be disappointed by a very uncool stylist...

Coupe Bizarre - you are meant to be all about image/style but there isn't anything cool about behaving like an idiot in the company of young impressionable teenager! Of course "to each their own" but have the decency to accept that speaking about sex,drugs,rock/roll may not be what young people need encouragement with( here's a tip - why not speak about art, music or fashion in a more positive way).

I plead to the owners (whom may or may not have children) not to tolerant this poor example from their staff as it will eventually give your business trouble !!!

I dont know about this place. Not to crazy about it. I used to be into really crazy hair cuts so i went here expecting something awesome and got my hair chopped in every direction and didnt look great. It was okay though.
jack / August 31, 2009 at 08:24 pm

I moved back to TO this year after 7years away and was sad to see that this salon had not altered it's style one bit. The white decor seems "2000 millennium" and so were the cuts! After my recent haircut here for "old times sake" I realize that somethings in TO never change!!! Coupe get some fresh style as the only thing bizarre is the millennium theme!!!

I cut my hair here twice. I went to cut a pretty basic bob. Nothing crazy. I was satisfied, but nothing really special. What I didn't really like was that they straightened my hair BEFORE they cut it. Personally, I don't think that this is a really great technique b/c I want a cut that compliments my natural hair texture, I do not straighten my hair every day. It was a very nice cut both times, but once I washed it, it was just o.k.

Other than that I had very nice stylists but I don't think this was the salon for me. I felt a little out of place. lol.

Nikkita / October 12, 2009 at 10:43 am
I am having a haircut with Nicole at Coupe on Friday. I have so far, been recommended by several other stylists (I am also a stylist) that she gives a fabulous cut that I will love every time. I have my color done at my own shop but we do not do cuts there. It is hard to find someone who can cut a-symmetrical Avant Garde Hairstyles. I will write in about my experience once I have had the cut. So far, I spoke to the reception, she was accommodating, very friendly and she told me all of Nicole's open dates available this week. She was very kind, and said she looks forward to seeing me Friday! I liked that...
Nikkita replying to a comment from Christina / October 12, 2009 at 10:47 am
That is a pretty standard procedure (straightening before cutting a bob)so the lines are perfect for when you do straighten it. Bobs are a tricky cut for someone who has curly hair if they plan on wearing it both ways. I agree something to match your natural texture is always the best way to go, Bobs don't really match the curly hair type always unfortunately. Do you mind me asking who cut your hair? I am going for my first time on Friday.
christina replying to a comment from Nikkita / October 12, 2009 at 12:45 pm
I don't remember who my hairstylist was, but she had really short platimnum blonde hair that was shaved on the sides.\

I've been to a few hair salons in my lifetime and in my experience I don't think it's standard procedure to straighten before you cut. I also have straight hair to begin with so what they did at coupe was really pointless. I found a good hair salon now (Cooney for Hair) and he would never straighten before he cut. I suppose its just different techniques, but I personally didn't like the techniques used at coupe. it was alright but nothing special enough to make me go back.

Interesting ... I keep reading all of this negativity. Bad haircuts, poor attitude, blah, blah .... Here is some advice, check out the place you are going to, ask questions, talk to your stylist and if you don't understand what they are doing - ASK!
The team at Coupe Bizzarre are make up of an eclectic group of people, and like all people everyone is different. If you expect magic with one haircut , you will be disappointed no matter where you go and who does your hair. It sometimes takes ongoing appointments to achieve optimal results, sometimes there is a lot of corrections from previous cuts and building up trust between stylist/client takes time.
Didn't your mother tell you, 'If you have nothing nice to say, don't say it'?
Nikkita / November 11, 2009 at 03:22 pm
I found everyone friendly, and Nicole who cut my hair is a good person. Charming.

Shawna, who is now at brennen demelo studios is the ABSOLUTE best! I have been getting my hair cut by her for almost 8 years now. I always love what she does. She was the first stylist who actually listened to me, my needs and my hair! She is super sweet and for sure loves her profession and takes it seriously. She always listens to what I want the routine I have with my hair, how I style it or don't and then gives me something I can work with. I always get compliments on what she does and I know she won't dissapoint. BD salon is very casual and laid back. I love how chilled out it is and LOVE everyone else who works there. I always get coffee, water, juice or tea first thing and a relaxing wash followed by a great style for the day.Shawna is great and I suggest everyone go see her today!

The colourist I would highly recommend at Coupe Bizzarre is Markis. He is the best and mainly know what he is doing. I've been going to Coupe for quite a long time to get my hair colour and always been satisfied whenever Markis does my hair. I am very fuzzy about my hair and so he is the only one I could trust. So gals stop searching and call Markis at Coupe...He's great.. / February 21, 2010 at 09:49 am

I think that we customers have to be as clear as possible with our hairdressers, bring a photo of the style if you can! Unfortunately I didn't do this when i went to coupe bizzare so as a result hated my cut, (who puts layers on a bangs for crying out loud!!) but whatever, is not the end of the world, hair grows.

BUT what I simply don't understand is when you pay good money to be treated like crap by some condescending prima dona when you ask politely if he could fix it...

I got my hair cut at this salon in the summer of 2010. I was in Toronto on a random trip and had been having issues with my curly hair. I searched online and found that Nicole at this salon specialized in curly hair so I thought I'd give it a shot.

Since coming home I've been trying to find someone in my hometown who could cut my hair as WELL! It was one of the BEST cuts I've ever gotten. It really made my curly hair look fantastic. Not to mention Nicole was an awesome person. Who wouldn't want someone that nice to cut their hair? Yeah, the salon was a bit abrupt but I think most salons are. What I care about is my hair and since that was GREAT I give the salon an B and Nicole an A+!

I'd been to this salon on several occassions over the last few years, mostly at the older location and was happy with the results. I returned over the holidays to find it closed??????? I went to the remaining salon and had my hair cut by a guy named Stef. First he was late and then kept me waiting more so he could smoke. Despite the cigarette he smelled like booze, even though it was mid afternoon (hangover or aft drinks?. He rushed through my haircut in 20 minutes and is probally the worst haircut I've had since I was a kid. Completely uneven and lopsided even though it's a pretty basic haircut. $65 for a lousy haircut from a drunk- I won't be going back !

I am a long time client of Coupe, more than 15 years might I add, and was just in the salon today and received my usual lovely haircut; xo Jane. There was a jovial banter going around the shop today in reference to some very unusual blog that had been posted. People were laughing about it and when I heard what was allegedly said I had to take it upon myself to check it out. I am amazed and saddened that someone would feel this ridiculous ranting necessary. It is disturbing actually that such ludicrous things could be posted on this site, or any public forum for that matter, about such lovely people. I always love going into this salon and gladly will see whomever is available to cut my hair.

The male helper that works the desk is untolerably rude. I love this salon, I love the girl that cuts my hair and I normally have an incredible experience. Last night that was ruined by the snide man who I had the extreme displeasure of having to pay. I will always continue to go back because my haircuts are brilliant but it's such a shame to walk out on a sour note because of one person. I highly suggest the salon either encourage this employee to tweak his attitude, or tell him to take a hike.

Anne Marie is fantastic! I've had a few full time hair stylists at Coupe Bizarre - moving on, only because they moved on, but each time, getting better than the last. Aside from that - the staff is great - they're all very friendly. The receptionists are always very helpful and very friendly. Mimi is great!

Wonderful cut! Anne Marie works really well with curly hair, despite the fact that my hair was a mess when I came in (it had been pulled back all day). Nonetheless, she could really read the texture of my hair, and spent almost two hours carefully trimming away until a great, short curly bob emerged. I'm very happy! She did exactly what I wanted, and was great to chat too. I would highly recommend.

Yesterday was my first time at Coupe Bizzarre and Stephane gave me a terrible cut. I'm sure there are some excellent stylists there but Steph didn't make any attempt to explain what he was doing and didn't follow instructions. He cut over 6" off and left me with an asymmetrical, wispy haircut - not at all the blunt bob wanted. I had even showed him pictures of what I wanted before.

There's a few things to note about this salon's policies:

1) They don't do refunds;

2) Adjustments are done by the same stylist who cut your hair. If you're unhappy with the cut your original stylist provided and uncomfortable having them near your head again, there is no option to have an adjustment done by someone else;

3) The owners of this salon are anonymous so there is no option to have complaints escalated to someone who can make a policy decision regarding your issue.

Make an appointment at your own risk. I'm extremely disappointed with the cut and customer service from this place.

i dont know where you got this "anonymous ownership" thing from... most people know that the owner of coupe is jimi who is also a stylist there
Dori / April 5, 2012 at 10:23 am
I can't even begin to describe how shit I think Coupe is. I went there for the first time a month ago. My stylist was grotty and stinking of booze and smokes. Whatever, I'm not fussy about that shit. But then I told him what I wanted. He wasn't listening, looking at his friend in the mirror. Then told me he 'didn't really have time' to wash my hair so just cut it straight across whilst it was bone dry and dirty!! This included bangs. I paid full price for the cut which took all of about 25 minutes and left. Hair looked like shit so I went back to try get it fixed. Was told I had to see the same stylist again. Got it 'adjusted'. Hair still looks shit.

I resent paying 70+ dollars for a cut done by a moron that I could have done better myself.

Did you have any luck finding someone that could possible fill Lani's shoes? I'm in the same boat and have been disappointed time and time again.
I need a colourist. / April 19, 2012 at 01:20 am
Can someone recommend a colourist that can play with light colours like blue and purple?
JK / May 2, 2012 at 10:14 am
COUPE BIZARRE definitely has its ups and downs. Jimi is a sweet guy and a considerate stylist who occasionally dials it in. His partner Robert is a total diva colouring genius who unfortunately is becoming more arrogant and bitchy (and more hard of hearing) every day. The pounding techno doesn't help. It's a great place to go to once a year, I'd say. It's as much about the culture - arty and queer - as it is about the hair. It originally (and perhaps unconsciously) styled itself on Warhol's factory and it's never changed. They may be nicer and more consistent somewhere else but they'll never be as outrageously flaming queer.

I have to say I've been moderately loyal to Coupe Bizarre for the past few years because Wendy (colourist) is so fantastic at what she does. However, since she is moving to the Montreal location I don't think I'll be returning. I'm not into bad mouthing people so I won't say who the stylist is, but the last few cuts I've had their have been terrible. They don't wash your hair, so they cut it dry and dirty. It always looks bad when I leave after a cut. Once washed it's usually ok, but the last few cuts have been horrible. Especially this last cut. I could tell the stylist was putting in no effort.
jeezlouise / August 23, 2012 at 02:21 pm
This review is for an appointment awhile ago (like over a year) but feel I need to reassure new customers that Wendy is amazing at colour (I cannot speak for anyone cutting hair, never had a cut here). I went in with home dyed blonde that had turned shades of orange and yellow and she was incredibly patient and helpful in turning it back to a normal natural blonde colour. Very thorough too- did a toning solution FOUR times for it too look up to her standards. I have never had a colourist who spent that much time on my colour and ensuring the results are even and good. I've moved since but for anyone curious, check out Wendy for colour.
Z / August 31, 2012 at 05:58 pm
Had my hair coloured by Wendy - she did a fantastic job, but I was a little floored when she told me after the colouring that she has a $100 service fee ontop of the cost of the colour (which for me was another $100 as I had fairly long hair). Maybe I should have expected the big service fee with the salon's reputation, but I had never had a hair cost broken down that way. I anticipated the website price guide to be approximately right... but my expected price was doubled. Overall: great quality work, but very pricey and a judgemental/unwelcoming environment... there was a lot of socializing going on between employees, but little to no chat with customers.
Amy replying to a comment from Z / September 6, 2012 at 01:51 pm
Z - Sorry to hear that there was a lack of communication on the cost of the service. If your hair was long and required a lot of product, which if the product cost was $100 (average is $10-15 range) or a colour correction, the cost should have been outlined to you better beforehand. THe service fee is what the colourist charges for his or her services. Amy

Both my wife and I get our hair cut by Amy. She has been cutting our hair for years. Never had a complaint. She listens to want you want and ALWAYS has a new idea for our hair. Would recommend Amy, hands down. You will not be disappointed.

i went there on a recommendation from a friend. knew what i wanted. firmly described what i wanted. had my cut done before my colour (in all my years of having my hair styled, i've never encountered this before. . .). stylist went out to smoke a joint before putting me in the seat, very obviously smelled of weed. that didn't bother me so much as, when i explained what i was looking for, was condescendingly told "well, i mean, it's... oooo kaaaaaay... if you only want a triiiiim." as i was in the midst of growing my hair out, i was only looking to lose a minimal amount of length, but with enough interest in the cut so as to not get bored within weeks & have to have it cut again. in the end, the cut ending up being ok -- fairly average. i restyled it to my liking when i got home.
the colourist (can't remember her name) did a great job on the colour. i had been rocking a very ashy white blonde for some time, knew what to expect, knew that my hair processed toner well. what was infuriating was that in styling my (already washed, already cut) hair post-colour treatment, the stylist managed to clip/tug an ear piercing with her fingers/comb. i left the salon with a bleeding piercing and an overpriced haircut. haven't returned in years.

I've been going to Vince at Coupe Bizzarre for almost 25years, at least 15 in Toronto and 5 in Montreal and a few out west, and can't say enough great things about him. Very professional but relaxed and laid back, definitely not pretentious. He always has creative suggestions but isn't pushy and just wants me to be happy, which I always am. I won't go to anyone else.
He just called to tell me he has moved to Parlour Salon, 6 Ossington (at Queen), 647.345.6663, just in case anybody is looking for him. It's only 3 blocks west so of course I'm headed west.

So you went to this salon YEARS a go? How is this review relevant? Salons change people regularly. This is was a useless read, you don't even include names.
Suvi / December 10, 2012 at 07:59 am
I went to Coupe Bizzarre after seeing a woman on the streetcar with a great cut. I asked who did her hair and she said it was Amy, that she had done her hair for years. I was in need of a cut so I thought I would go and get Amy to see what she could do. I haven't had a cut in like 8 months and was in need.
When I walked in I realized I had been there years earlier with my sister. It still looks exactly the same, even the music seemed the same -hmmm. TIme warp! When I met Amy though she didn't look like she was stuck in 1998 so I breathed a sigh of relief!
I explained what I wanted and what my hair goals were and she completely GOT IT! She shaped my hair but kept length. She explained the process that we should go through to get what I wanted in the long run. Amy showed me different styling options too.
Amy knows what she is doing, says she has been cutting for 20 years but doesn't look older than 30, maybe she started at 10? LOL
Anyway, great cut, great stylist - Amy is great, I will be back!

Coupe Bizzarre sucks
I'd been seeing Vince at Coupe Bizzarre for several years and was always very happy with my haircuts. Whether I was growing it out or cutting it short, the cuts were always fantastic and super easy for me to maintain.
Just before the holidays I called Coupe & was told he was no longer there & they didn't know where he was. Reluctantly, I went to Jamie at Coupe and told her I was trying to grow it out so just a micro trim and follow the last haircut. Well, WTF, I left with a super short layer in the crown and short wisps where there had been none. I thought I was trying to grow it out!
No way was I going back to back to try to get it fixed. I found Vince, who is now at Parlour Salon (647-345-6663), through a friend and he did whatever he could to fix Coupe's mess. I'll never stray again!!!
So long Coupe, hello Parlour.
Kate / February 9, 2013 at 10:29 am
Vince use to work at Coupe Bizzarre and now he no longer works there and they didn't or won't pass along his information to me. If anyone know where to find Vince, please let me know! (Best hair cut - ever!)

Thanks DK!
Vince rocks!!

Anne Marie cut my hair this morning, she took as much time as she needed to read what my hair was like, then gave me a beautiful haircut that I won't have to spend time on. Tidy yet wavy, and I can let it dry naturally. I love that I didn't have to suffer with getting my hair washed, I hate that part anywhere I go. So I loved my experience there today. Also, the receptionist ran across the street for coffee and got me one too. And it was great coffee.

My cut was great - no complaints there - but I was severely disappointed by the colour that was done to my hair. I requested ombre highlights during my consultation because I wanted to be more blonde but in a natural way, without streaky highlights starting at my roots that would have needed touchups every six weeks. I was told: "you know, ombre's been done before..." implying that it would be tacky for me to do what so many other women have done. Not only was this comment rude and inappropriate, he's supposed to give me what I want, not give his opinion on what he thinks is fashionable or not. But, stupidly, and trusting that he's the professional so I should listen to him, I let him talk me into getting regular foil/streaky highlights in a very "subtle" manner, he promised. This essentially meant that I spent over $100 on highlights that I can barely notice. I now have to pay another $100 at another salon to get the ombre highlights that I originally wanted. And this is my main complaint, though I should mention the fact that he blow-dried my hair without a brush of any kind (he explained that Coupe Bizarre doesn't carry round, and instead raked his 3-inch long fake nails through my fine hair, tearing out more than a few strands. I have a sensitive scalp; this was a painful experience. And why didn't I speak up and tell him to stop ripping my hair out? Because I'm a big wussy who complains only after the fact on the Internet. Despite the great cut, will not be returning because of a horrible colour experience.

I usually get my hair cut at Toni & Guy or Salon Tocci in Liberty Village. I've walked passed Coupe Bizarre a few times & decided to try it. Made an appointment for 6pm- and showed up early (5:45pm). Was barely greeted by a rude hipster male receptionist. Not only did I sit and wait half an hour, but the stylists were all outside smoking even though customers were waiting. While I was waiting- I saw some girl's hair get completely BUTCHERED- she left looking like a cancer patient- sorry but true. I went in to get colour done, and when I had my consultation, the guy ran his fingers through my hair looking disgusted (saw his face in the mirror), and said NO WAY, that I had coloured it too much and he didnt recommend it, then proceeded to tell me he'd "rather work with virgin hair"...who the F*** has virgin hair nowadays. I walked out- total douchebags in that entire salon.
I told my coworkers about my experience & they all said "Eww why did you even go there?? They suck." I guess they've had their own bad experiences. I work in a design firm with savy/fashion forward 20-30 yr olds, all who hate this place too. Now I know why.
Would NEVER recommend going here again.

After a disastrous perm and cut at another salon, I stumbled across Coupe Bizarre in hopes that they could somewhat fix my haircut. I looked like a totally bum that day but no one made me feel bad. The receptionist was very kind and friendly, as were the other stylists. I had my hair cut by Jane and not only did she fix my hair, but she made it look great! I've never got as many hair compliments as I did the past month. I refuse to go anywhere else now, good price, good people.

Having been going to CB for years and always had great experiences with Vince. Amazing haircuts, fantastic conversations, and very chilled.
Work keeps me on the road for long periods and in my stops I have in Toronto, if I haven't been able to get Vince I have gone to a few others at Coupe but always walked away disappointed. Vince has been great great at accommodating my manic schedule.
Just returned to find out Vince has moved on. I called CB to ask where he had gone and despit my pushing they played stupid & tried to push me to book there. With their attitude it is the last place I would ever go!
After a simple google, I found Vince at Parlour salon (Ossington at Queen). Just went today and of course CB knew where he was. Parlour is way more chill and inviting, with much better vibe. Definitely a step up and more relaxing. A fab haircut & experience as always with Vince.
So simply
Coupe - you suck
Parlour - any day
Leave CB behind and head to Parlour to see Vince won't regret it !!!!
toronto dude / October 23, 2013 at 07:40 pm
yikes! this place should be closed.

i too was stupid enough as a customer to stay at CB for a few years clinging to the myth that i was getting a great cut.
i ignored all the time i'd spend cleaning up the sloppiness of my cut myself when i got home. each visit, i sat there perched on a tiny little clean spot on a leather sofa (mostly covered in does it even get up there?? maybe because they don't sweep the floors?) being ignored by the receptionist dude and watching the staff smoking away in front of the door.
then when finally called i would have to take my coat off and put it on the floor or on top of the stylist' coat also on the floor. when you have to wear your old coat to go get your hair's a problem.

eventually the rudeness, the filth and the grime just got too much for me.
i quit going there and found a new place across the street from my house that charges 1/2 as much, offers complimentary coffee, is spotless and gives great cuts.

the owner of CB obviously doesn't care so let's hope it closes soon and saves other customers from suffering through a CB experience.

I had my hair cut by Dona M when it was dry and flat ironed (I told her that this wasn't my preference) and even though I told her I wanted blunt ends and long layers, I walked out with jagged, uneven ends and no layers. It looked great when it was flat ironed but as soon as I washed it out, all of the imperfections of the cut were obvious. My friend saw my cut and said, "your hair's really uneven -- did you cut it yourself?" I emailed Dona right away to say that I wanted it fixed and I waited for her to respond, but she didn't. Thus began a series of calls to the salon and I asked the receptionist if was possible for her to cut my hair when it was wet, as that is what works best with the texture of my hair. The receptionist said that Dona refused and would only schedule 15 minutes for a fix. I said that wouldn't be long enough and that my preference was for a wet cut, but they refused on both counts. I said I'd like a refund then so I can get it fixed elsewhere, but that too was refused. I used to work in customer service, so I understand the importance of pleasing the customer, and this is clearly not a priority in this salon. I got so frustrated by back and forth phone calls and the lack of effort to accomodate what I was requesting that I said to the receptionist, "either Dona can fix my hair properly or I'll write a bad review on google." Finally, after weeks of wearing my hair in a ponytail because it winged out all over the place no matter how hard I tried to tame it, I agreed to a 15 minute dry cut, just to have a resolution. When I arrived, Dona was visibly defensive and said, "so, I hear you've been threatening me on google". I explained the above, and she responded caustically, "I know everything that was said." She took my dry, unwashed, unflat ironed hair in her hands, made about 10 snips, and said "I'm done", 3 minutes later. I said, "but it's still uneven" and showed her a piece of my hair that was different lengths. She said, "I'm not doing anymore." I said to her, "That's fine. So I will write a bad review after all." And here it is. This place might do funky queen west cuts, but if you're looking for professionalism and satisfactory customer service, give this place the slip.
