A fresh and kinetic post-post-rock quartet from Baltimore, Ponytail is a little Boredoms, a little Deerhoof, a little Captain Beefhearts Magic Band. Its got two trebly Fender Telecasters, polyphonically entwined; a raw but energetic drummer; a high-pitched singer (Molly Siegel) who ululates and yelps and bird-calls, ecstatic or incredulous or baleful. And when the smoke clears at the end of each song on Ice Cream Spiritual (We Are Free), the bands second album really, your mind needs a minute of rest after sprinting to keep up you can appreciate the structure and composition all over this record. Its no small feat.
