How do you accurately capture the inner life of a thoughtful, sensitive young woman within the pages of an illustrated novel? To celebrate the release of Fear of Fighting (Invisible Publishing), acclaimed writer Stacey May Fowles and celebrated illustrator Marlena Zuber will compare notes about their creative process with those of the writer and co-creator of Skim, Mariko Tamaki. Also on the bill is a live set by Tomboyfriend.
Stacey May Fowles' writing has appeared in various online and print magazines, including Kiss Machine, the Absinthe Literary Review, Fireweed, and subTERRAIN. Her work has been widely anthologized in books including Nobody Passes: Rejecting The Rules of Gender and Conformity, First Person Queer, Yes Means Yes, and I.V. Lounge Nights. Her first novel, Be Good, was published with Tightrope Books in 2007, and This Magazine called it "probably the most finely realized small press novel to come out of Canada in the last year." Fowles recently adapted Fear of Fighting into a stage play as part of Nightwood Theatre's Write From The Hip! program for emerging female playwrights. She currently lives in Toronto where she is the publisher of Shameless Magazine.
Marlena Zuber is a freelance illustrator and artist. She graduated from the illustration program at the Ontario College of Art and Design and her illustrations have appeared in the Washington Post, Boston Globe, Chicago Tribune, HOW Magazine, BUST Magazine and Print Magazine. Her work has also been published by Tightrope and Coach House Books, and she is a member of Tomboyfriend, a new emerging 1950’s rock and roll art band of the future.
