Broken Arrow, Nuclear Accident in Palomares (Operación Flecha Rota)
Jose Maria Herrera Plaza
Spain, documentary, 2007
96 mins. (Beta)
(Spanish with English subtitles)

On a routine mission in 1966, two American B-52 bombers carrying four Hydrogen bombs collided over Palomares, Spain, then under General Franco’s iron rule. The bombs fell to earth, narrowly missing a school. Two exploded their conventional charge, and as a strong wind blew, radioactive material scattered over the poor agricultural region, known for its tomato crop. The fourth bomb was lost, requiring an intensive search operation. Forty-one years later the region and its residents continue to be tested for residual contamination, yet many questions remain regarding this Cold War mishap. Broken Arrow is an extraordinary historical document sure to make us wonder about all the other similar incidents of which we will never know.
