my friends, my sweet barbarians,
there is that hunger which is not for food -
but an eye at the navel turns the appetite
round
with visions of some fabulous sandwich,
the brain's golden breakfast
from "A Breakfast for Barbarians"
Playing on the central trope of consumption in Gwendolyn MacEwen’s poetry collection, A Breakfast for Barbarians, the Scream Literary Festival invites you to engage with the book in its entirety over a sumptuous dinner provided by Juniper Catering. Four contemporary poets from different generations and artistic traditions – Barry Callaghan, Stephen Cain, Louise Bak and Lisa Foad – will read the complete text, each bringing their own voices to the work of Toronto’s most beloved poet. Dinner Tickets are available online at our store (http://thescream.ca/?q=festivals/2008/events/booklength_a_breakfast_barbarians); or at Type Books (883 Queen St. West); $10 reading only tickets will be available at the door.
The menu will be posted shortly. Do note that the meal will be vegetarian with a meat option.
Permission for use granted by the author's family. Thanks also to Exile Editions.
