Tomson Highway's Kisageetin: A Cabaret

A premiere presentation by the Thunderbird Centre with Denise Bolduc. Kisageetin is a musical cabaret of 12 new songs composed, performed and written by the dynamic storyteller, novelist and award-winning playwright Tomson Highway.

Joining Highway will be the sensational Peruvian vocalist Patricia Cano and acclaimed saxophonist Christopher Plock.

KISAGEETIN recounts the adventures of a post mistress in a small town who has, through her years of working at her tiny little country post office, developed the ability to read the letters of her "clients"...through the envelope! She has, in other words, developed a kind of "clairvoyant's" ability to read through paper...when in actual fact, the talent comes from her knowing the emotional lives of those clients so well, after having worked, after all, in that same post office in that same small town for over 20 years! So each of the 12 songs is in actual fact a letter that she sings out to the audience and that tells a story of 12 of her favourite "clients

"My music has most closely been described as inspired-and-in-the-style of such composers of theatre music as Cole Porter and Kurt Weill, except that, in my case, they are written with Cree lyrics, as well as French and English. My music betrays elements of classical, jazz, popular music, ragtime, honky-tonk, stride, Latin, BUT, with lyrics in Cree, as I myself am a full-blooded Cree from the Manitoba."

Guest Artists and Production Team:
PATRICIA CANO

Patricia Cano was born and raised in Sudbury, ON where she began her career in the arts as a dancer and later as a community theatre player. She pursued a degree in Theatre and Spanish Literature at the University of Toronto where she met Tomson Highway and performed in the world premiere of his musical ROSE. She then worked in Paris, France for four years, studied traditional Korean folk singing in South Korea, lived in Rio de Janeiro for half a year, and then headed home to lay the framework for her musical career. Since 2001, Patricia has traveled with Tomson Highway, performing the songs from ROSE and THE INCREDIBLE ADVENTURES OF MARY JANE MOSQUITO in many cities around the world including Toronto, New York, Budapest, Berlin, and more! She is honoured to be the first to sing his most recent musical creations and is eager to see how far this new cabaret takes them! Patricia is presently touring Peru launching her first album, ‘This is the New World’ with her friend and musical collaborator, Carlos Bernardo – Brazilian guitarist extraordinaire!

CHRISTOPHER PLOCK

Christopher Plock, a celebrated saxophonist (sometimes even playing two at a time), Chris' additional proficiency with clarinet, flute, percussion and guitar has placed his skills in high demand by some of Canada's leading music acts: Ron Hawkins and the late Jeff Healey have featured Chris in live gigs and recordings, while his work on the K-OS CD Joyful Rebellion netted him two Juno Awards. In 2002, Chris released a solo album that brought both his playing and his singing to centre stage. My Romance, a collection of 10 beloved Jazz standards, featured the voice of a true crooner. Chris' silky tenor, heard previously on Healey's song Dark Town Strutter's Ball, soared over classics like Mean To Me, Bye Bye Blackbird and Since I Fell For You. "Christopher Plock is a talented multi-instrumentalist, a seasoned pro and easily one of the best male jazz vocalists this country has ever produced!"- Jaymz Bee JAZZ.FM91
