THE EVENT

Five years ago photographer John Gundy “… fell in love with a group of people and started photographing their events”.

The Event draws from five years of John Gundy’s photo essays that explore the local food landscape and the growth of the movement by documenting memorable culinary events.
“I immerse myself in this theatre -- from backstage to front of house.”

Gundy’s portfolio includes active portraiture conveying the passion and vision of the creative minds behind the events; the chefs, growers, organizers and the vibrant local community.
“They don’t just create with local food; they create a culture of local food”.

“My photographs contain images harvested locally from food events. I go in search of honest and active portraits of people deeply engaged in their activity and process, and seen at a vital moment of expression, focus and creation.”

The Work: prints and moving image
“My prints include active portraiture, abstracts, shots of cutlery, chefs hugging farmers, long legs and legs of lamb, hem lines, tattoos, goofy dish-pigs, bonfires and chef love-ins (if you didn’t fall off your stump, you weren’t there)…

“The selection of photographic prints will be taken from their original event context and hung as an imagined event in chronological order from prep to pack-up – presented without descriptive labels.”

“I have shot approximately 150,000 images in the past five years and will show almost all of them -- even if only for a split second in a video presentation --compressing five years of events into a flythrough from my POV.”
