Drum Till You Drop

Learn to play the djembe with Barrington Hibbert.

Barrington Hibbert, a founding member of Baro Dununba: Ancestral Wisdom through Drums, leads a workshop where you’ll learn one rhythm from West Africa (sofa). Sofa (which translates to “warrior”) was originally played on a stringed instrument called a "bolon." Learn the accompanying parts played on the djembe, sangban, kensedeni and dununba.

Please note: A very limited number of drums will be supplied for adults and children. Participants are asked to bring their own drum(s).

A live music and dance class with Cuban musician extraordinaire Roberto Linares Brown and dance instructor Vladimir Aranda.

Don't think you have what it takes to salsa? Think again! This fun (and all-ages) class will awaken rhythms inside your body you never knew existed. No experience necessary, but a great attitude is a must.

La-Toya Fagon has a passion for quality, healthy food and a long-standing family tradition of Caribbean cuisine. After graduation from George Brown College, Fagon began crafting her own take on "island paradise," fusing her soul cooking style with traditional Caribbean ingredients with Western flavours. Her catering company, Twist Catering, specializes in event catering services ranging from 20 guests to 200. Her current portfolio includes Loblaw's, Benson & Hedges, MetroLabel, KarmaPRO Entertainment and the Caribana Festival to name a few.

Film: Soul Power

(2009, USA, English, 97 min., Dir. Jeffrey Levy-Hinte)

The dream-child of Hugh Masekela and Stewart Levine, this music festival became a reality when they convinced boxing promoter Don King to combine the event with The Rumble in the Jungle, the epic fight between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman. Soul Power is a documentary film about this legendary music festival (dubbed "Zaire '74"), and depicts the experiences and performances of such musical luminaries as James Brown, BB King, Bill Withers, Celia Cruz, among a host of others.

DJ Skate Night: (The Real) Soul on Ice

Carl Allen: 8-9:30pm
Kwame Young: 9:30-11pm

DJs Carl Allen and Kwame Young will be flooding the ice with soul, funk and house hits. In addition to being a renown DJ, Carl is also co-owner of The Harlem Underground restaurant and an accomplished concert promoter, putting on shows that included Doug E. Fresh, Lost Boys, AZ, Busta Rhymes, and SOS Band, to name a few. You can hear him on his live mix show, Loungin', airing Sundays on CKLN 88.1FM.

Kwame Younge is a promoter/writer/bon vivant who is honoured to link up with DJ Carl Allen on this special DJ Skate Night. Kwame is a music lover to the core, and will continue to defend the groove, one party and one funky soul at a time.

Saidah Baba Talibah
with tunes spun by DJ L’Oqenz

Saidah Baba Talibah is the daughter of Obie award-winner and Tony- and Grammy-nominated Salome Bey, Canada's Queen of Jazz, Blues and Spirituals, and the niece of Andy Bey, also a Grammy-nominated musician. She offers up a distinct and fluid blend of bluesy rock, deep funk and hot, buttered soul with a voice that can go from a seductive, soft purr to a powerful bellow at the turn of a dime.

Born and raised in Canada, her music has been greatly influenced by Toronto's musical and ethnic enclaves. She first created stories that reflect the multitude of sounds and styles emanating from the city as a founding member of the seminal soul/rock group Blaxäm and was prominently featured on their 1998 EP, Kiss My Afro. Her most recent project, The Phone Demos, came out on digital release this past October. Talibah will preview songs on her highly anticipated debut (S)Cream!
