Canadian Cinema in Revue

The next screening in the Canadian Cinema in Revue series is Richard Kwietniowski’s, OWNING MAHOWNY on Tuesday Nov 24, 7:00pm at the historic Revue Cinema in Toronto (400 Roncesvalles Ave)

Curated by blogger, critic and filmmaker Alan Bacchus, Canadian Cinema in Revue, recent winner of Best Revival Programming in NOW Toronto, is a program devoted to showcasing innovative and entertaining features, related short films and the people who made them.

The true story of a Toronto bank administrator who scammed his employer out of millions of dollars to feed a gambling addiction inspired the remarkable Owning Mahowny. Philip Seymour Hoffman delivers a superb performance, lasering in on his character’s sharp focus and the single mindedness with which he deceives the banks, the casinos and most tragically, his family. We first saw Kwietniowski’s talent for obsessive, enigmatic characters in his lauded debut feature, Love and Death on Long Island. Teamed with the extraordinary Hoffman, he has created in Dan Mahowny one of the great screen characters in Canadian cinema.

Roger Ebert agreed, picking Owning Mahowny as one of the best films of its year.

U.K.-based Kwietniowski has kindly agreed to participate in a Q&A via Skype after the screening at the Revue, despite the time difference.

Preceding the feature is Cameron Groves’ short film FLAMINGO – a visually sumptuous poetic ode to the neon allure of Las Vegas.

This screening is presented with the support of The First Weekend Club, the Toronto After Dark Film Festival, and Daily Film Dose.com.

Tickets for the screening will be $8 for members of the Revue and sponsoring groups; $10 non-members.
