Bonjay - The Gimmee Gimmee EP release party - Toronto Edition

Following remixes for Mad Decent, Ninjatune, and Ghetto Arc (XL Recordings), Toronto duo Bonjay take a step beyond their local scene with the independent release of the Gimmee Gimmee EP on November 20, 2009.

Bonjay is taking their dancehall soundsystem-style live show to some of their favourite cities for a sweaty, basement-style party. Having seasoned their chops with opening slots for international acts like South Rakkas Crew, CSS, Diplo, and Tricky, Bonjay are no strangers to jumpstarting the dance. NOW Magazine says of their live show, “Styrofoam Ones and Kid Cudi both turned in great sets, but it was Bonjay’s dancehall-house-electro-hip-hop that we were still thinking about the next day. They’re getting better with each show, and they were already awesome to begin with.”

The Toronto edition will feature kindred spirits and very special guests Poirier (Ninjatune) and Valeo (Masala radio).

About Bonjay:

Drawing their name from the spice island slang for “Good God!”, Bonjay represent the sounds booming out from the jeeps, towers, and headphones of young Toronto: a unique blend of dancehall innovation, indie sentiments and R&B hooks.

Born in the basement of a pub at Ottawa’s legendary Disorganised parties, what began as a crowd-pleasing party lark has developed into a serious commitment to songwriting and production, including remixes for labels like Mad Decent, Ninjatune and Ghetto Arc (XL Recordings).

With Alanna on the mic and Pho behind the turntables, their live performance is a high-energy sound system of bass, beats and soul.

About Poirier:

The power of DJ/producer Poirier’s bass will blast through any flimsy attempt to classify his music. While the purists struggle to label his sound as either dancehall, soca, or electro, Poirier, signed to Ninja Tune, just takes what needs from all three and unleashes the result in a raw dance floor frenzy. Poirier’s tracks are sparse landscapes of Caribbean drums made superhuman with pulsating, pitch-shifting, and infectious bass and synth patterns. His style evolves and tears through new genres constantly, leaving a trail of packed, chaotic dance floors in its wake.

About Valeo:

Valeo isn’t djing standard dance music… but you’ll love sweat nonetheless. Gathering club music from all around the planet, he’s presenting an eclectic mix of what he calls “International Street Beats”; putting together global takes on electro, ragga and hip-hop. Former Parisian, Valeo has also lived in MTL, where he has organized parties for 3 years. He's invited international artists among whom were Buraka Som Sistema, Zizek Club, Dj/Rupture, Poirier and Megasoid. He's also behind the world followed blog MASALA.
