The Haunted Burroughes Building:
Built in 1917 by a wealthy business man, the Burroughes building thrived in the post-WWI era as a high-end furniture store catering to Toronto's upper crust.
The owner of the building lived on the top floor above the store which he shared with his wife and young daughter, Elizabeth.
However, within a few years the neighborhood became a haven for theft. With the onset of the depression, break-ins along Queen West were a common occurrence as people became desperate.
On the night of October 31st in 1933 right around midnight, Elizabeth was awoken in bed by the sound of her parents screams. In a fumbled robbery attempt, the thief had awoken Elizabeth's father and a struggle ensued. The building owner was stabbed several times, the screams were those of her mother's at the sight of the horrifying display.
Elizabeth ran out of bed to her parent’s room only to see the invader's final and fatal blow to her mother, still lying in bed. The thief, realizing that the girl was now standing in the bedroom doorway white as a ghost chased her up the stairway to the rooftop. The girl would end up being thrown from the top of the building to her death. The murderer's identity would never be discovered.
After the investigation concluded authorities shut the building down, which remained closed for decades until a new owner bought and renovated the property. The landlord was warned however by several construction workers that the building was haunted.
...rumor has it that late at night screams can be heard from the 6th floor and a little girl’s voice calling for her parents coming from the stairway to the rooftop.
