Steam Whistle Unsigned #10: Parallels, Kidstreet, Ministry of the Environment
Once Again! Another edition of Steam Whistle Unsigned!
We have a fantastic line-up of female fronted, dance floor friendly acts this time.
-Parallels (http://parallels.fm/) is a high-energy, synth-pop trio consisting of drummer, Cam Findlay (formerly of electro-stars, Crystal Castles), Holly Dodson, vocals and keyboards and Joey Kehoe on synthesizers.
Parallels is quickly building a loyal following with sold-out performances in their hometown, Toronto. They’ve shared billing with established bands like Glass Candy, Fan Death and Sebastien Tellier (Mod Club) and at The Toronto Fashion Week Closing Finale.
-Kidstreet ( http://www.myspace.com/kidstreet) Cliff, Edna, and Karl Snyder. The sibling trio write upbeat, melodramatic pop songs not fit for cross armed hipsters. Having played several shows in their native land Ontario, Kidstreet is ready to break free from the conformity of indie rock and cross into the boundaries of the dance world.
-In the spring of 2007, guitarist Rory Lindsay, bassist Tristan Samuk, and drummer Andrew McMullen met vocalist Liana Rose. Dubbing themselves Ministry of the Environment (http://www.myspace.com/ministryoftheenvironment) they wrote a fresh batch of tunes and began playing monthly shows in Toronto venues. October 9, 2008 marked the release of their first disc, “An EP.” Blending elements from their previous bands (Showroom, Leviride) and their shared love of The Sea and Cake, Sonic Youth, The Smiths, and others, Ministry of the Environment create pleasingly ambitious and carefully crafted pop music.
