The Wednesday in Parkdale The Toronto Tree Tours presents their next guided neighbourhood walk. If you feel you missed out on their tour of green roofs earlier this month, I would highly recommend checking this out.

The tour will begin in the H.O.P.E. Community Garden and participants will learn how to start their own urban vegetable garden. Other parts of the tour will include a visit to a 150 year old pear tree and huge century-old elm trees.

RSVP info and map to the meeting point after the jump.

I dug up my parking spot and planted a garden early this summer and it went surprisingly well. We have a relatively large crop of tomatoes, green peppers, hot peppers and eggplants, and all of the basil, thyme and chives we can eat.

My advice is to just dive in. It is a rewarding experience, and very easy.

Good stuff Ben!

I just moved to a new house in the middle of summer and I'm finding that maintaining a window sill herbs is pretty easy, although those containers don't really allow for much growth. We have 1 small potted tomato plant as well, but it's hanging on for dear life.

Taking the plunge and replacing concrete with soil like you did is the only way to go. That's my plan for the spring :)

We also dove right in this year and set up a container-based veggie garden on our rooftop patio which did surprisingly well - tomatoes, cucumbers, green pepps and basil by the bushel. Only problem has been squirrels munching on the cucumbers...

I also started a garden in my back yard- removing the landscaping stones my landlord put down and digging out four square plots (you might remember, I posted a couple articles on blogTO in the spring). My spinach perished to disease, but everything else is growing well, especially the cucumbers. I'm also having problems with critters eating my tomatoes, though!

The H.O.P.E. Garden on Cowan is absolutely beautiful- go and visit for sure if you appreciate gardening!
