Dark City Coffee

Posted by Staff / Posted on December 22, 2010

Dark City CoffeeDark City isn't a cafe, rather it's one of the GTA's top coffee roasters. David Thompson's roastery began as a retail operation, and expanded into two storefronts before a catastrophic fire led to bankruptcy, a business reorganization and a relocation to Scarborough, where he roasts his daily orders to a carefully selected soundtrack. Orders made by phone will be filled the next day and delivered anywhere in the GTA.

Coffee is fantastic ... and at this time of year I get a couple of pounds for a Christmas present. Delivers anywhere in the GTA for free and good prices

We've been getting Dark City deliveries since we moved to Toronto from Seattle in 2007. The espresso roast is delicious and has a nice thick crema. Occasionally we buy beans when we're out and about - Intelligentsia, Stumptown, 49th Parallel, but none come close to Dark City! They're also extremely reliable and easy to order from with an email or voicemail.

Drove all the way to McLavin Avenue and was puzzled to find it`s a condo. Security at the gate said Dark City`s owner rersides there but the actual business is elsewhere in Scarborough. Cannot think why visits appear to be discouraged.

I tried dark city coffee based on some recommendations and the ability to choose the roast level. I noticed that all over the website they mentioned that if I am not satisfied with my order they would send another one free of charge, so I figured I had nothing to lose even though they are a bit more expensive than the beans I usually get and love at pilot.

I had ordered a medium roast and the beans showed up very dark and labelled as "Vienna roast". Most sources consider that to be a dark roast and I couldn't taste any of the characteristics of the bean. No problem, I figured, different people have different opinions of what is dark and what is medium. So I wrote politely and asked if maybe there was a mistake. No they said, Vienna is the medium. So I asked for an order of the light roast as my replacement since I wasn't satisfied.

They refused to live up to the guarantee written all over the website and would not send me my replacement. I could understand this if they had no guarantee on the website, but this seems like false advertising to me.
