CocoaLatte

Posted by Gadjo Sevilla / Posted on April 7, 2010

CocoaLatte TorontoCocoaLatte brightens up a rather dreary stretch of St. Clair West. This small, four-month old gelato bar and café with a bright turquoise exterior offers a wide assortment of breakfast, light lunch, and dessert options selected and prepared by the family that owns and runs the place.

We start off with a satisfying and frothy latte ($3.50) that comes in a tall glass and is one of the best I've had recently. There's also dizzying variety of hot and cold coffee and cocoa-based drinks on the menu.

cocoalatteGrilled Panini ($7.50) is their specialty so we go for the one with homemade tuna salad (white tuna, diced tomatoes, French onions and a touch of olive oil). It's served with a rich and milky cream of mushroom soup that was an ideal starter for a rainy Spring afternoon.

Other items on the menu include a hearty selection of grilled wraps like the grilled chicken wrap (chicken breast, peppers, mushrooms, red onions, spinach and Swiss cheese) and the California club (smoked turkey, Swiss cheese, avocado, greens, red onions, bacon, light mayo and mustard).

cocoalattecocoalatteFor dessert we skip the gelato (too cold outside) and order the chocolate cake ($5.25). It's a densely packed three-layer wonder of thick chocolate icing, truffle filling and moist cake sprinkled with white chocolate shavings and drizzled generously with chocolate sauce. It's the perfect size for two or three people to share.

Cocoalatte's cool yet inviting interior is bright and airy and seating arrangements are ideal for small groups of two to three.

cocoalatteGuest artists have their work displayed on the wall alongside a world map, various mirrors and Zen-inspired furnishings. There's also a large back patio which will be ideal for the prime gelato consuming months ahead.

cocoalattecocoalatteCocoaLatte is open Monday to Saturday from 8am to 5pm.

Nice review. Would have liked a review on their breakfast, as there aren't that many places to choose from for breakfast on St. Clair in that area. I'm pretty sure, from looking at their website, and reading the sign on the door, that they are open on Sundays too. This is key as there are even FEWER places open on Sunday for brunch near this location!

Can you list some types of gelato they offer? Is it home-made?

Being in the neighborhood, we have been there a number of times. The food is excellent, and the soups are made by a local caterer who does high end organic soups- they are all been very tasty.
Great addition to the neighboor hood..
St. C West is turing into a foodie heavan with Cocolatte, Stockyards, Prop and Cafe Leopold!. Keep this up and I wont have to leave the area!

Not living far from this awesome little venue I've visited a number of times! It's been such a great new ficture to the growing food business on St. Clair West and you couldn't ask for anything better than their gelato, (it does beat La Paloma's; over by Lansdowne and St. Clair West). I havn't had an opportunity to try anything else, but the food is always prepared fresh and does look ver appealing and delicious! Check it out readers!

My friends and I thought this place was terrific. We had brunch here last winter, and it was a great place to hide for a bit from the wind and snow. The food was very tasty, and the coffee was made just right. It was definitely worth the subway ride up! I'll be back for the gelato.

large patio? I sat there with two other friends and we were one of three tables! Hardly a large patio.

Other than that my only complaint was that I received my lunch before my latte. I'll give them another chance

"Homemade style soup." The key word is 'style', therefore it's not really homemade.

I can vouch for breakfast (though I forget what I ate) and their custard tarts. Cozy atmosphere, too.

Went today for breakfast- we def ordered the wrong thing- done get the overpriced two egg "starter special". Way too expensive with eggs overdone and no potatoes (my fav part of breakfast). Chorizo wasn't bad as a protein but the ham was sliced deli fare. Coffee was ok but having to pay for a refill kind of blew. Go for the paninis and skip the brun items- the paninis and the gelato are what they do best.

I come here for brunch and I like their breakfast bagel because it tastes fresh and it's quite filling. Toasted panini comes with very nice soup and I agree with Ira Levy it's very satisfying. I must also agree with Ann about the eggs, it tastes good but not enough to call it a meal. And Jaz is right about the patio, it is actually not large but good enough for 4-5 small tables. I think they're open on Sundays until 5-ish too.
