Dencan Books & Magazines

Posted by Joseph / Posted on March 4, 2008

Dencan BooksThe Dencan Books & Magazines store is located in the West end of the Junction right beside Book Exchange. Between these two stores and Pandemonium down the road, the Junction is one of the best places in the city to find used books.

I've been to used bookstores all over the world, but this is a special one and we're lucky to have it.
Rino / May 20, 2009 at 08:00 pm
Had a wonderful selling experience here.

After haggling a bit and agreeing to an amount, we completed the transaction. During a brief chat, upon telling the owner of my unemployment situation, the gentleman offered me a small extra amount of cash. But WAIT! AS I was sorting my remaining books on the sidewalk otuside, the owner came out and offered yet more cash.
I'm not sure how much I should of originally gotten, I wasn't looking for much, and realize these are tough times for book sellers. But even though they were small amounts, the gestures could not of been grander and generous:)

Also a great place to get lost and purchase some of the wonderful deals!
Tess / February 2, 2010 at 11:39 am
I called the store to inquire about a book and what do you know, this nice man that people have commented about here (Eddie) answered the call and he went out of his way to help me find the book I, unfortunately, couldn't find in his store. What a nice gentleman! May God bless him. We need more people like him in this planet of ours.

I have been buying book, comics, cds, and dvds from eddie for over 20 years!! I have nothing but great things to say about him and his store!! Dencan books is by far the best book store in toronto!!I go there at least once a week to look around or just to talk to him and he ALWAYS remembers my name! Go check dencan books won't regret it!!
Allan / April 3, 2011 at 11:43 am
The owner is nice but the bookstore is so dirty! The floor looks like it hasn't been swept since the 80s and the shelves are covered in dust. I worry about the health of the owner sitting all day breathing this stuff in all day. Good luck finding a book there too as stuff is piled haphazardly in boxes strewn about the floor. I found it hard to even turn around in the scifi/fantasy section without worrying about knocking somethig over. The bookstore next door, while small, is at least clean.
larry / April 7, 2011 at 07:42 pm
I was in this store today and it's one of the best I've ever been in. Cluttered and full of treasures. The owner is a super nice guy and really knows his stuff. I found books I've been looking for, for years. Another plus is the prices are the lowest I've seen anywhere. If you don't mind the clutter etc. this is the place.

As a huge book fanatic, I can assure any book lover that a trip to Dencan's is worth it. Roughly categorized by genre, it may not be the best place to look for something specific, but Eddie (the owner) is ALWAYS willing to help out and ask around for whatever you need to find (and has found me many a book I could find no where else). If you're just browsing: this place is perfect. Old, new, hard to find, popular, he has them all. I often find so many I want I have to have them held, which has never once been a problem. Several books I'd given up hope on have been found in this store, and I know I'll only continue to discover amazing finds in that massive pile of books; and all for an excellent price. One of my staple literary sources.
D.K. / January 3, 2012 at 12:33 pm
Dencan used books has always been my favourite source of various reading gendres. There is something about browsing the stacked aisles and boxes of books that intriques me to find that perfect mystery. Eddie has given me a fair exchange and even suggested new authors that I might enjoy.
We're lucky to have Dencan Books in the Junction!
Siraj / January 7, 2012 at 05:27 pm
Hi do you sell used textbooks?
eddie replying to a comment from Siraj / January 8, 2012 at 03:32 pm
Hi - sorry not into used textbooks. Try - thanks for inquiring.
Warren / February 8, 2012 at 10:22 pm
Best deal on books I've seen in Ontario. Go and search through the mountain of books, you will definetly find something for a great price!
Renée / February 19, 2012 at 01:46 pm
Decan Books is my favourite used bookstore in Toronto. More often then not, Decan's has in stock the book that i am after. The owner has a great knowledge of literature and is always helpful. Don't be overwhelmed by the clutter because Eddie knows the location of his inventory.
Lindsay / March 14, 2012 at 07:54 am

Hi, are you guys interested in science fiction? I have a collection of Star Trek books from the 70's and 80's, mostly pocketbooks but some 12" as well. Majority are near mint because I never got around to reading them! Please let me know.
dencan books / March 17, 2012 at 07:38 pm
Hi - I'm pretty overloaded with sci-fi right now so I'll have to pass on them. Thanks for inquiring.
Jeff Wiseman / March 21, 2012 at 08:42 pm
I always find something unique at Dencan, the prices are terrific, and Eddie (the owner) knows his stock. Tons of cheap paperback penguins, new and old.
Jeff Wiseman / March 21, 2012 at 08:44 pm
Watch the typo at the top! It's DENCAN.
Steve / March 24, 2012 at 03:49 pm
I have visited Dencan Books for the past 5 years, and it is always a pleasure to visit. Eddie is the nicest guy, when I went to his store I was searching for old VHS wrestling videos and was surprised to find some real gems. Eddie was nice enough to call me when he would get new videos in. It's been awhile since I visited the store, think I will be visiting again very soon!
Corey / April 6, 2012 at 08:56 pm
I've been to bookstores all over North America, and Dencan Books ranks with the best of them. Cluttered beyond belief, but it's an escape from the real world. Eddie the owner not only knows his stuff, but is super-friendly and great to talk to. I've never seen lower prices on hard-to-find books. This bookstore is a treasure-hunter's dream. Highly recommended to all!
Madeline / April 12, 2012 at 09:12 pm
Hey, I was wondering what kind of books you buy. I usually assume literature but do you also buy 'mainstream' books (I'm referring to preteen/teen genres)
dencan books replying to a comment from Madeline / April 13, 2012 at 07:42 am
Hi - I buy some of the types of books you mentioned. Call me at the store(416-763-2302) and let me know what you have. Thanks.
Jo / April 15, 2012 at 08:08 pm
If you're a book lover, you're in for a real treat with a visit to Dencan Books. Eddie is extremely helpful and may even turn you on to a new author to read, as he did for me and probably will again. You can easily lose yourself perusing through the vast amount of books and probably leave with an armful due to the low prices! Terrific place!
Sharon / July 10, 2012 at 04:20 pm
I echo the comments above. I've frequented Dencan's for years for armfuls of books from various genres. Eddie can always suggest a book or an author when I don't know what I feel like reading, and not once have I had to take him up on his offer to "return it if you don't like it". The shop is chock full of piles of almost hidden treasures and Eddie knows what is where. It is most enjoyable when you crave a few books to find a whole summer's worth in one visit. This shop is perfect for the Junction strip.

Sorry I don't have that item. We are re-arranging the store so it might be a little difficult to get a stroller in at present but will be ok in the near future. Thanks for inquiring.
Stephanie / August 30, 2012 at 07:20 am
Fantastic book store filled with treasures, including Eddie himself! He gave me a great price on my books and let me take my time wandering through his treasures. By far the best book store in Toronto — I will be back :)
Michelle / September 5, 2012 at 04:23 pm
This is a great store with a great variety of books (and more!) The owner will help you find what you are looking for and there's always a good deal. I have been in multiple times and have to limit what I choose so I can carry them all home. A wonderful gem of the Junction!
Sophie K / September 12, 2012 at 12:00 pm
My absolute favourite place to buy books! It is a gold mine of book treasures! I have built a fantastic collection thanks to this place, and you can't find a nicer person than Eddie. He goes out of his way to help you find anything. He has a great knowledge of literature, definitely knows his stock and has read almost every book out there. I owe my incredible Steinbeck collection to him! It's also the most affordable place to buy books, especially for students like me! Truly a top notch shop. The Junction would not be the same without it.

Hi..I have a few books that were my great grandmothers and wondering if you purchase old books or know where to take them. They are 6 hard covered books from the Dorothy Dale's series (copyright Cupples and Leon 1909 in good condition and King Albert's Book printed in Britain by Clay & Sons Ltd.. Looks very old and is in fair to poor condition as pages have yellowed but the book is still intact. Thanks for the info.

Wow what a store! This has got to be Toronto's best place to find books you thought you'd never see again. Cluttered and messy like a book store should be. The owner whose name is Eddie is really friendly and helpful. I'm just new in the city and don't live real close to the place but it is now my go to bookstore.
Sara / August 10, 2013 at 12:28 am
Hi Eddie! Don't you if you still check this regularly enough to be able to answer my question but what the heck!

I'll be in Toronto next week for a few days and having never been into your store I was wondering if you carry any George Orwell? 1984 specifically. I haven't got much time to spend in the city before moving on, so I'm trying to get ahead of everything.

eddie / August 10, 2013 at 10:22 am
Hi Sara - I have few Orwell books in stock. If you're coming on Monday, I'll be closing at 3pm to go to the dentist. Thanks for inquiring. Take care, Eddie

dencan books / December 1, 2013 at 05:38 pm
Sorry don't have those in stock. Thanks for inquiring.
Rick / December 31, 2013 at 10:39 am
There is no denying Dencan books is unique. Amazing finds are always near, wherever part of the store you happen to be near. And Eddie knows where everything is, in no matter what stack or box laying around. And the prices cannot be beat - anywhere - and they are always open to negotiation. But you won't try after Eddie gives a price that is more than reasonably fair. In a city where retail is often polished and predictable, come for something different, unexpected and fun. You never know what you'll find.
R. Caspian / May 12, 2014 at 09:43 pm
This is truly a gem of a bookstore! Definitely not your typical,run-of-the-mill remainder store a la BMV. Dencan is a classic used bookstore where among the chaotic stacks of books one can stumble upon some real treasures such as Folio Society books for very reasonable prices (oops I just gave away the biggest secret in Toronto). The owner Ed is a very nice guy too. Such places are becoming a rarity in the modern world nowadays so I urge all book lovers to support it as much as possible.
Sylvia / May 20, 2014 at 11:05 am
This shop is like walking into my dreamworld, piled from top to bottom with books. It's slightly overwhelming when you first take it all in but if you ask the owner, who is the sweetest person, for a book he knows exactly where it should be and if it's not there he'll check every single possible place it might be in order to find it for you. I never walk out with less than two books. The place is magic, especially in a city losing it's bookstores at a heartbreaking rate.
lukasz / July 29, 2014 at 06:39 pm
If you enjoy hunting for books there are no better grounds. I've left other bookstores with nothing in my paws feeling cold and empty. Not here though,I quickly find a stack of books place them on the counter and await for the good deal in store. Eddie is great at helping you find the subject or particular books that you are looking for. Easily my favorite bookstore in Toronto.
DM / August 16, 2014 at 05:11 pm
I could die happy in a place like this. I have never left empty handed, thanks to the abundance of stock and the knowledgeable staff. The pricing makes it possible for me to indulge in discovering authors unknown to me, and my old favourites are also at hand. The breadth of materials is already filling gaps in some of my most treasured collections. Happy. Happy. Happy.
Phillipa Croft / August 26, 2014 at 09:33 am
Hands down my favourite book store in Toronto. Always fun to hunt through the stacks and find unusual and beautiful books.
Mariam Sharifi / September 26, 2014 at 03:49 pm
LOVE this book store. It's so unique and I could (literally) spend a whole day going through the piles of books and hunting for some amazing reads. Dencan has a personality of it's own and I think that's what attracts people to it. Old but gold, definately one of my fav. book stores in Toronto. Not to mention the prices are unbeatable

Your store sounds like a treasure trove! Will you be open between Christmas and New Year's?

I have been looking for a book by William O. Steele book called The Spooky Thing. Do you know if you might have it? It's 80 pgs hardcover from Harcourt 1960.

I just got back from my first visit to Dencan Books. All I can say is I WILL be back! If not for today's snowstorm (which prompted me to depart early) I might still be there. I was there for an hour and I was just scratching the surface.

Dencans is a wonderful bookstore ; my favourite in Toronto. It has all the classics and Eddie always offers his help to find anything. Although it may be overwhelming at first, once you actually take the time to look around you will get happily lost in this magical store.

Great place! A really wide selection of books. Its nice to hunt the shelves for a book you've been looking for. Something for everyone.

Dencans books is my favourite bookstore. It has a great selection of books at reasonable prices. The owner, Eddie is also very friendly and helpful. The layout is chaotic in a charming way, the loosely collected genres, arranged in towering piles, recommend authors in of themselves. The hunt is fun!
George / July 23, 2015 at 12:37 pm
Just made my first trip to Dencan. It won't be my last.

The rumours are true: Eddie is a friendly, easy-going guy and his store is organized chaos. Shouldn't all used bookstores be like this?

Eddie leaves you with the impression that if you can't find what you're looking for, he'll gladly burrow his way through his enormous stacks to find it.

A real gem.
