Sweet Tooth

Posted by Tim / Posted on May 23, 2008

Sweet ToothThere's nothing quite like Sweet Tooth on the Danforth. Susur Lee's son rated it them the best cupcakes in Toronto in a recent taste test. There are many varieties to choose from, most with fun, sparkly, sprinkly stuff like the two above.

Not worth the cash...the icing was quite bland, no real flavour.
Anonymous / June 24, 2008 at 02:55 am
Ugh....seriously? I recently tried the Sweet Tooth cupcakes and they were stale, and the icing tasted canned. The gold standard are Calgary's Crave Cupcakes and I've yet to taste a Toronto cupcake that comes even close.

I was drawn into this place by the beautiful pastries in the window. I bought a couple of cupcakes and not at all impressed. Maybe because it was the early evening and they had been sitting? The cupcakes were dryyyyy...not at all the moist cupcakes I was hoping for.

The cupcakes at Sweet Tooth look pretty, but tasted just alright. I paid over $11 for 3 cupcakes so they are VERY pricey for what they are.

My faves are Its the Icing on the Cake, and Madeleine's Cherry Pie and Icecream's mini cupcakes.

Unfortunately, I also paid a lot of money for one of their cakes, and although it was beautiful, it tasted awful. I served it at a dinner party and NO ONE finished their slice.

I recently made a purchase of one dozen cupcakes to take to
a friend's birthday party. I purchased a variety of flavours as they all looked delicious. Unfortunately, to my surprise and embarassment, the cupcakes were as hard as rocks and iced with what seemed to be a form of dried out glue. I'm not sure how old they were but considering I paid a premium ($42/dozen) I was expecting them to at least be fresh. I will not be buying or recommending anyone to purchase anything from Sweet Tooth in the future. Although they looked delicious they turned out to be a huge disapointment.

I just removed four negative comments. They were all made under the same IP address but under a different username. However, there was reason to believe that the comments were all made by the same individual.

I have to agree: I've tried their cupcakes on three separate occasions, and while I've always been excited, I've always been disappointed. Depending on the time of day you go there, there seems to be a varying degree of freshness. We went there late in the afternoon, and that was when our cupcakes were at their least freshest. It's a pity too, since the place actually has a nice feel to it.
Joe / January 4, 2009 at 01:47 pm
The butter cream icing on the cupcakes is delicious. My favourites are the rasperry and strawberry. The pecan flan and the apple pie are also among the best i've ever tasted. The other great thing about Sweet Tooth is that you can sit down and enjoy yourself without feeling rushed to leave.
Grace / January 25, 2009 at 09:07 pm
I agree with Joe, I recently tried Sweet Tooth's cupcakes for the first time and I will be back for more. The store is beautiful and the people who work there are so friendly and welcoming. It may be a little pricey but it's worth it!
Anna / February 3, 2009 at 05:50 pm
I'm with Joe and Grace on this one- I'll be back for sure. It's also one of the only places I know with great bread pudding

"The gold standard are Calgary's Crave Cupcakes and I've yet to taste a Toronto cupcake that comes even close."

EXACTLY. I'm a native Torontonian who was fortunate enough to live in Calgary for a bit. Crave Cupcakes - THE BEST.
Don / April 11, 2009 at 12:53 pm
Try The Buttercream Bake Shoppe in Calgary. They are way less sweet than Crave and way yummier. They have a tonne of flavors.

This is a wonderful old world style patisserie. Alex and her staff are very friendly. I have noticed that many people have posted comments about the cupcakes. That is only one single item on the luscious menu - I tried chocolate brownies, linzer ribbon squares and they were delicous. The cakes look phenomenal - for special is the great tradition of warm service and deliciously indulgent sweets.
Wazoo / April 18, 2009 at 05:31 pm
You can comment all you want about which are the best cupcakes in Toronto. Unfortuantely, cupcakes in Toronto are simply 3rd rate - without exception... All of you that commented her, go to magnolia or crumbs in NYC and you'll never be able to eat a cupcake here again!!!
Chammy / April 26, 2009 at 01:43 pm
I too was VERY disappointed with the cupcakes. There was an older lady in the line in front of me who after hearing how much the cupcakes were turned around and headed out. I should have followed her lead. The cake part is STALE, and the icing is average. I've had better cupcakes from a DuncanHeinz box.

Way too expensive for what it is. They need to focus less on the pretty and more on the quality.
Suzane / May 7, 2009 at 11:06 am
I tried once their cupcakes, and I was very disapointed!!

One advice, try The Sweet Escape Patisserie in the Distillery district, you won't regret it. Everything is homemade, and they have other stuff like sandwiches/ice creams...
It's one of my favorite place :)
VeronikaHorwitz / May 17, 2009 at 07:49 pm
Cupcakes are not very good indeed - BUT... good looking boy server that you must talk to if you get the chance. i don't know his name, but he's the only guy i've seen there.
Bonjour Brioche / May 21, 2009 at 12:42 pm
This is no 'patisserie' the pastries are expensive, stale and in some cases days old. Have to wonder about a cake shop that gets it's stuff from a third party. At least Dufflets has it's own bakery and the quality of their stuff is always good.

Danforth lacks a good cupcake shop and sadly sweettooth misses the mark badly.

Bonjour Brioche makes amazing fresh pastries and breads, give it a try and the brunch is amazing.
Emily / May 24, 2009 at 10:08 pm
I was happy to finally have a reason to go into this shop tonight. It is a friends birthday and I was bringing the cake. The staff didn't seem to interested in selling me anything. I actually went back to give them a second chance and the server who finally noticed me had her back to me while I was talking to her. Thank goodness for Dufflet

Unfortunately Tim, there are alot more than four negative comments noted here. Also, several comments and suggestions to try better products elsewhere. I have also tried many of the sweets at this little patisserie and although the staff are friendly and everthing looks appealing - the reality is the product falls short. Dry, expensive, bland are a few things that come to mind...definitely a let down.
dee / June 11, 2009 at 01:06 am
This place should be called Stale Tooth, the prices are sky high and their cakes and cupcakes suck.

I wasted some hard earned money on a cake based on curiosity and the pretty display, but once you cut into the cake you get a junky, dry, and I was embarrased to have served it. I will miss my $50 and will never, ever buy anything from Sweet Tooth. So many better options out there.
Daniela Gorizzan replying to a comment from Lisa Young Chow / August 10, 2009 at 11:50 am
$42/dozen - WOW! Are they made of gold?
I have a question that has nothing to do with cupcakes - did you graduate from St.Robert's HS -about 25 years ago?
Collin / September 28, 2009 at 01:07 pm
bought 2 french macaroons from there yesterday and boy was it a WASTE OF MONEY.

first they over charged me by $1, and it was just horrible.

i made the mistake of asking if their stuff is house made, and i was told that they buy all their stuff. Sweet Tooth is one place I'll never visit again. In fact, I hope you guys remove it from your top ten cup cake list
Yummy / November 12, 2009 at 10:52 am
We had a dessert potluck at work and one of my co workers bought some cup cakes in from sweet tooth. The cupcakes looked really good, but taste was poor. The icing was bland with no texture and the cupcake was dry (not moist as I pictured in my mind). I was planning to go get some before I tried them, but definitely not worth it.
Rich and Creamy / December 4, 2009 at 09:52 am
I love the writeup - Susur Lee's son gave them a great rating.

If you have to rely on reviews from Children you know something's wrong. Sweet Tooth is terrible plain and simple.

Never trust a 'patisserie' that doesn't make it's own stuff. If you want junk pastries for very high prices this is the place.

I live right off the Danforth, when I saw a bakery that wasn't greek inspired I was excited to shits... husband and I celebrate our birthdays 3 days apart and were having a birthday party. Got 2 cakes from sweet tooth, one chocolate and the other vanilla. Both POOR!!! The vanilla was the most bland cake I have ever tasted, Loblaws is far better even.

And to be honest their service is also very poor, considering that anywhere else you go to have a dessert on the Danforth is a fun and enjoyable experience. Have not gone back, even though I am tempted by the look of the items I need to remind myself how untasty the items truly are.
Pies Suck / December 8, 2009 at 12:03 am
Their pies are crap, they like to say they have the best pies in Toronto but you can get better at Sobeys. Seems like the cakes are just as disappointing as the pies.

I was also shocked by how expensive everything is here. They bring in refrigerated cakes and pastries and try to pass them off as fresh. This is nothing but a distribution centre and their suppliers are low quality.

Keirelle / December 8, 2009 at 12:58 am
They just get their product from Phipp's. The owner is one of those syrupy (fake!) sweet types, and she is very difficult to stomach. The butter cream is really quite tasteless and honestly, the only really good product in the shop is the bread pudding, and that is only if you manage to get it fresh... difficult when they generally only get one large pan of it a week!

Looks are not everything. It may look beautiful, but the taste just isn't there. Without taste, why bother? Plus, those prices are ridiculous!
Helen replying to a comment from Don / February 4, 2010 at 04:03 pm
Figures the owners husband would write on this...
Danforthian / February 7, 2010 at 03:47 pm
Sweettooth isn't a bakery, they don't have a kitchen.. Everything they sell is bought wholesale, go ahead and ask, they'll tell you straight out. It's a cute place, but nothing is fresh, everything is WAY overpriced, and they definitely do NOT have the best cupcakes. Lame.
JumJum / May 22, 2010 at 06:29 pm
Ijust got back from Sweet Tooth and tried their berry crumble tart and it was really good:) I've never tried their cupcakes but that best cupcaekes I've tried in Toronto was fron the Cupcake Shop
Dorathy / June 14, 2010 at 02:44 pm
I am really sorry to report that I recently had a cupcake from Sweet Bliss that was anything but. The decor of the shop is nice and the people working there are friendly, however, the cupcakes were stale and the icing was tasteless. It's to bad really, because if they got there act together they could really do well with the location. Cupcakes are hot right now, but this place is steaming off, not sure if the place is struggling financially or what, but day-old cupcakes and non-tasting icing.... seems like a no brainer to me.
Renee replying to a comment from Anonymous / July 29, 2010 at 01:56 pm
Crave in Calgary is good...but expensive. The best (and most modest) cupcake I've yet to have is from Sugar Sweet Sunshine in New York. I just got cupcakes from Miss Cora's kitchen and they sort of taste like the cupcakes I make from Betty Crocker's boxed cake mix.
Sharon / September 25, 2010 at 11:06 pm
Made my first visit to Sweet Tooth on the Danforth this evening. Got there just after 7pm on a Saturday night, and didn't see any cupcakes, so went for the cakes & squares instead. Had a slice of the vanilla w/ strawberry buttercream cake and the chocolate fudge cake. Also had a variety of squares. Cakes were dry and definitely not fresh. Haven't had the squares yet. Will comment once I do. Place is way overpriced ($6.49 for a slice of cake?), especially for secondhand goods. Wanted to try the pies, but not at the price they were selling it. Would love to catch when they get some fresh bread pudding. That's my fave! Big plus though, the staff were friendly.

Thanks for all the reviews. I won't bother wasting my time!!!!
Jan / December 13, 2010 at 08:35 am
I came in twice, each time having to leave, once because their delivery truck broke down, another time, there simply wasn't anything in the store to sell, I mean nothing, except days old cookies and tarts that they are trying to sell as "fresh." The last few months, they are featured in at least 4 Groupon types of promotions. That tells you something, they are dying for customers.
christina / February 17, 2011 at 05:53 pm
probably the worst cupcakes i have ever tried... the cake part of the cupcake was incredibly DRY and the icing was so stale and butter-tasting i could not eat the entire thing... way to overprice, never going back!!!

Try the cupcakes from Coveted Cakes. They are located in Vaughan on Millway Avenue (check out their website). All their products come from the Cheesecake Factory Bakery...yes...the infamous in the staes. These are by far the best. cant sit down to have one, but you can purchase a four pack!
