The Cupcakery

Posted by Guest Contributor / Posted on January 19, 2009

The CupcakeryMy days of messing around with Betty Crocker mixes are through! Wandering down St. Clair Avenue W. one day, I happened upon The Cupcakery, which first opened its doors in March of 2008. As soon as I entered the shop, I was greeted by a tiered cupcake tower which stood out against the simple but elegant decor and let me know that I'd come to the right place to satisfy my craving for a creamy caked confectionery creation.

I was delighted to find that The Cupcakery offers about thirty different homemade selections that encompass the more traditional fare ("La Dolce Vita" - a chocolate cake topped with chocolate buttercream icing) to some less conventional flavours, such as "Peanut Butter & Jam" and "Sweet & Sour" (a strawberry cake with the choice of either lemon-lime or blue raspberry buttercream icing).

The Cupcakery"The OC" is the aptly-named favourite for customers from a neighbouring high school, and the "Principessa", with its pink vanilla icing, has become a popular choice among young girls looking for something as pleasing to the eye as it is to the taste buds.

The Cupcakery specializes in customized cupcakes that are ideal for weddings, bar mitzvahs and birthdays. The shop's wizards can even colour-match for any occasion. They even have a "Cupcake Girl" to book for catering corporate events!

There are also a variety of sizes to choose from; bite-sized, regular, the "Cupcake for 2" (take note for Valentine's Day, you sweet-toothed lovebirds, you) and the large cake. The standard-size cupcakes cost $2.50 each, and can be purchased by the half-dozen or dozen for $13.00 or $25.00 respectively, and are indeed worth the price. The cakes are moist, the buttercream icings are rich, and the decorations are creative.

They have terrible customer service though - I live in the area and whenever I go in, I feel like they couldn't care less about being there.

I LOVE THE CUPCAKERY! They are so delicious and as a wedding photographer I refer them to all my wedding clients! The OC is perfectly moist and not too sweet.

The customer service is terrible and I found the cupcakes to be dry and artificial tasting. You can do better.

Honestly, these were a huge disappointment. I've had designer cupcakes before and they were fabulous. These are overpriced and under par with many other cupcakes I've tried.

These ones taste store bought and for $25/dozen, you can do so much better.

I'll stick to my Queen St bakeries.

I agree! The service is really crappy here. Just when I walked in, I got a bad vibe from the girl with tattoos. Your cupcakes are good but cheer up! You work in a cupcake shop!

The service was horrible and the cupcakes were disgusting, especially when there were fruit flies on them! GROSS.

Never eaten one of their cupcakes, but today I watched two people in one of their company vehicles empty the garbage in their car onto the street. Water bottles, coffee cups... all right onto the ground. They both saw me staring in disbelief, and neither stopped. Bad company representation, even if they weren't employees. I'd never heard of them before, but I won't buy their stuff now. So ridiculous.

This place seems closed now. Had a sign up about a temporary closure for weeks now. The cup cakes were okay, but she could use some serious customer service skills. Went there three times in total. Each time we felt like we were disturbing her. She seems bothered while we were deciding the flavours we wanted. Terrible attitude from this person (I assume she's the owner as she's the only one we've ever seen in there). After the 3rd strike, we weren't going back in there anymore.

Oh I am saddened that they closed. I make a trip there every so often like Valentines and such for a sweet treat. I really like their cupcakes. Unfortunately, I would have to agree with many people on here that commented on the poor customer service. I too, often felt that their skills in the friendly service with a "smile," were lacking. You really do have to be a people person to work in that industry and if not, at least hire some cheery people to front your store. They were often downright aloof or miserable. Oh well..Time to find a new place. And while I am on the subject of customer service, I have also been to the cupcake shoppe at yonge and eglinton and they are also quite bitchy and snobby at times. Like lighten up people, you make cupcakes for a living!
