Overheard at Nuit Blanche 2012

Posted by Derek Flack / September 30, 2012

Nuit Blanche Toronto 2012Probably one of the best parts of Nuit Blanche — whether the whole thing turns out to be a shit show or not — are the conversations you're bound to overhear while out wandering around the city into the wee hours. There was some impromptu comedic gold to be heard last night, and just when I was getting tired and a little bitter about how my night was going, someone always seemed to blurt out something ridiculous enough to inspire me to keep trekking on. And I'm not even talking about the predictable fumbling over the artistic status of this or that installation — no, there were some unexpected gems, too.

Earlier today, we hit up Twitter to find out what other all night art-goers were treated to in terms of street banter. The results range from the depressing to the hilarious. Here's some of what folks shared with us. If more good stuff comes in, we'll update this post.

Nuit Blanche doesn't turn the city into a gallery as much as a night club: it's all bright lights, loud noises and odd performances; everywhere's crowded; everyone's drunk.
Whether you like this is a matter of personal preference.

Some of these really are hilarious. But the prize goes to the tourist.

On Victoria St during the mobile rave 'do you need to puke it out?'

Really depressing this year. The homeless and severely mentally ill have shifted to Spadina and College. There's not much else to do in Toronto but get drunk.

An old woman kept repeating "Why is God keeping me alive?" I'm sure most people out last night feel the same about their own lives.

Seems about typical for a night out in Toronto. Nuit Blanche or not.

Whether people came out for the art or not, it's the first time in my 22 years living in Toronto that I saw that many people actually staying up past their bedtime. Being born in Manila, Philippines, I have never seen Toronto that crowded. It was great.

Love Nuit Blanche. To avoid drunk teenagers just stay away from Dundas Square.

The two things I heard most often at Nuit Blanche were

"Is this it????"

and

"Oh, it is that thing, you know, the thing with ....."
