This Week In Comedy: ALTdot Comedy Lounge, TrueLoves Comedy Hour, Freddy Proia and Comedy Hostel

Posted by Michael Jagdeo / July 28, 2012

comedy torontoI know, I know...you're a Bacchanalist, it's Caribana week, and you've already dropped $100 on fête tickets. But let's face it: at some point, you're going to need to sit down and take a break from the gluttony. Might I suggest a comedy show where you can rest your weary waist?

MON JULY 30 / ALTdot COMEDY LOUNGE / RIVOLI / 332 QUEEN W / 9PM / $5

When Tracy Morgan was in town a few months ago, there were more than a few tweets from audience members that thought Trixx stole the show as MC. That's saying something, given that Tracy's at the forefront of the black comedy scene right now. This week, Trixx reprises his role as host, bringing up killer acts like Debra DiGiovanni, Matt O'Brien, Christophe Davidson, and Darryl Orr. Pay special attention to Tim Gilbert: I heard him do a bit about his grandma this past week that had me dying with laughter.

TUES JULY 31 / TRUELOVES COMEDY HOUR / THE CENTRAL / 603 MARKHAM / 8PM / FREE

Don't sleep on this show. Jon Schabl has the best Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles bit you may ever hear in your life. Josh Infald is quickly becoming one of the most sought after amateur comics in Toronto. Alex Crawford is a fireball, with strong material and even stronger improvisational skills at his fingertips. There'll also be cheap beer and the chance to win a $20 LCBO gift card.

WED AUG 1 - SAT AUG 4 / FREDDY PROIA / YUK YUK'S / 224 RICHMOND W / 8PM / $11-20

Freddy's ol' school, having performed his Italian-infused stand-up act across North America for over 20 years. He's wonderfully versatile, playing everything from comedy clubs to acting as the master of ceremonies for the Canadian Insurance Underwriters Association. So hey Woodbridge, this week, it's worth the drive to downtown.

SAT AUG 4 / COMEDY HOSTEL / COMEDY BAR / 945 BLOOR W / 7PM / $10

This past week, I attended a taping of Late Night With Matty D, a show which hosted one of the best crowds I've ever had the privilege of performing in front of. Mike Rita, your headliner, went up before me and had me shaking in my boots as his bit about a crying baby destroyed the audience. Ali Hassan hosts, and he'll no doubt be on a high after opening for Maz Jobrani in Montreal and taking part in Just For Laughs.
