Contest: Win Tickets to The Canadian Opera Company's Fidelio

Posted by Corina / December 25, 2008

operaThe Canadian Opera Company is ready to commence their winter season, which will feature two passionately romantic productions, Fidelio and Rusalka.

These intense love stories are sure to heat up the cold winter months, and we've got a pair of tickets for one lucky reader to attend the Jan. 27th performance of Beethoven's only opera, Fidelio, at the magnificent Four Seasons Center for the Performing Arts.

The Canadian Opera Company's fall season opened with Don Giovanni and War & Peace, which focused on the intensity of the human spirit facing struggle. With mixed reviews of these performances, the Winter session looks to bring romance and fantasy back to the Four Seasons' Stage.

Dvorak's masterpiece Rusalka will open January 31st. This Czech opera combines Erben's A Garland of National Tales, Hans Andersen's The Little Mermaid and Friedrich de la Motte Fouque's Undine, weaving a fantastical love story about a nymph who falls in love with a human. This COC presentation will also feature an Appetite for Opera event at the Tundra restaurant on January 22nd.

The production of Fidelio opens on January 24th, presenting Beethoven's only opera about a love strong enough to conquer all odds and adversity. Beethoven preferred the title Leonore, in honor of the heroine forced to disguise herself as a man to save her lover, but it was decided to put her male name Fidelio up on the marquee. The rich history of this opera will also be open to attendees through the pre-performance opera chats which allow the audience to better understand the details behind this great composer's only opera.

CONTEST:

Whether you have been to the opera before or have yet to share in the experience, we want to make sure you don't miss out! So, blogTO is giving away one pair of tickets to the January 27th, 7:30pm performance of Fidelio.

To Enter: Leave a comment telling us what you *love* about the holiday season. There's so much to love... you just have to pick one good thing.

We will select one winner at random from all comments left before 5pm Boxing Day. Please make sure to leave a valid email address when you comment, so we can contact you for prize claim details.

Happy holidays and keep spreadin' the love!

I love spending time with family and friends. Time is precious to all of us. We may not have each other around for ever, but once a year (at least!) the most valuable gift to me is sharing time with loved ones.

I secretly love that my mother insists on wearing her tacky Santa Claus apron to Christmas dinner (even though we make fun of her for it).

I love having an excuse to make elaborate christmas cards, playing with knives and dead birds all day, and blasting Mariah Carey's christmas rendition.

I love... lamp.

Also... days off work which leads to copius OT shifts, a grand feast which leads to 10 lbs of weight gain, and giving/receiving awesome gifts.

Love the Christmas chorus and timeless classics played across all radio stations - non-stop and sometimes even commercial-free.

I love that for two days my family sees only each other. We eat, talk, drink, watch movies, read and just generally exist without any outside interference for two days. I really do love that.

I love the fact that I can indulge my love for brussel sprouts without everyone else complaining that they're not a real food item. :) That...and watching the same ads for Boxing Day sales at stores where I can ho-ho-hold the payments until 2010.

I love how, after 27 years of marriage, despite my parents' insistence that they will not buy each other a gift, my father continues to give my mother a bottle of Clinique Happy and a new nightgown from Sears every single year. And every year she maintains surprise and contentment at dad's seemingly unexpected gesture. :)

I love the idea that I get to have a nice few days off and go home to my parents and be with my entire family. Dinner is usually had at my Grandmothers on Christmas eve - and she cooks enough food to feed an army... then there is christmas morning at home and then visiting other friends and relatives. Its just nice to slow down for a couple of days and be reminded of what is really important.

I love that, for whatever reason, everyone seems a little happier and friendlier. It's not much, but the parting 'Merry Christmas' hugs betwen people you're not normally that close to always makes me feel that deep down, we're all loving and caring people. No idea why Christmas brings that out, but I love that it does.
