TOAE Deadline Looms

Posted by Sookie / February 15, 2007

20070215_TOAE design.jpgPainters, designers, artists, photographers - this is your moment to shine! It'll be months until the Toronto Outdoor Art Exhibition takes place at Nathan Phillips Square, but you've only got until March 1st to submit your application to exhibit. There's more to it than exposing yourself to a massive crowd, there's also $30,000 in awards doled out. Everything you need to know is online and there's a big drop box just waiting for your application in the lobby of 401 Richmond.

I've got some favourite artists I hope to see again this year - like Julie Moon, who's lamps take human form, and Marco Cheuk with his bright and beautiful prints - but there's always room for more.

Wonderful idea but the cost for artists to participate seems a bit steep......$300 for artists/$100 for full-time students.

Especially as no booths/displays are provided.......chairs, tables, displays and overhead shelters must all be provided BY THE ARTIST. Bascially, you are paying $300/$100 for a 3-day rent of a 10'x10' space

Seems like the organizers are going to make some good money for minimal support. And though they will be awarding cash prizes in various categories, I suspect that most artists would prefer a bit more logistical help, as actual prize winners will be limited.

One more thing.....

Before anyone jumps on my back about how the submission fees will defray the "$30,000 in awards," take a look at the sponors/donors list:

....those are some heavy hitters, and I imagine the prize money will, for the most part, be supplied by them.

Not at all steep compared to a show like One of a Kind, I believe.

They do get something for their $300 -- I know someone who exhibits there, and there is nighttime security (to keep the booths from getting trashed overnight), etc.
