Gallery Space: Back To Art School!

Gallery Space, a weekly round-up of Toronto art shows, for May 4th.

The spring term has come to a close and subsequently grad art exhibits are opening up all over town.

Sheridan College presents "Voices", a show featuring work from grads of the Applied Photography program. The exhibit, which is also part of CONTACT this year, opens tonight at 7pm and runs until May 18th at the IX Lounge (11 Davies Ave, #303).

Over at OCAD (100 McCaul Street), their 91st grad exhibit opens May 5th and runs until May 7th. Featured work (which is also available for purchase) covers a vast range of media and styles. Admission is PWYC and there will be demos in printmaking, ceramics, jewellery making and textiles.

At George Brown, the "RAW" Graphic Design school show opens up tonight at 6pm and also runs until May 7th at 290 Adelaide East. Only the 30 best projects make the cut for this show.

The AGO Gallery School (317 Dundas W) is celebrating their 75th Anniversary and yep, you're invited. The festivities will be held on May 7th and will include drop-in art classes, an exhibition of Gallery School student work and, of course, birthday cake.

In non-school related shows:

Tartar Gallery (183 Bathurst, #200) is also celebrating an anniversary -- their 10th. The exhibition entitled, "Could Have Been the Weather," opens May 6th and runs to June 6th. It features the work of Jitka Hanzlova, Kara Hamilton, Mads Lynnerup, and Gabriel Kuri. Work ranges from photography to media media and digital audio installation.

Opening tonight at the Prefix Institute (401 Richmond Street W, # 124) is Remix by Dawit Petros, coupled up with the magazine launch of Prefix Photo 13: Face Values. The Face Values issue, as you might have guessed, explores the world of photo portraiture. Petros' exhibit will showcase similar themes and he will be also be back on May 6th at 2:30pm to deliver an artist's talk. Admission to the talk = $10 or $8 for students.

In the rookie show category, Jim Allen, producer of Different Hats in Different Shapes, has his first solo painting exhibit at Cantine Restaurant (138 Avenue Rd). The show opens May 7th from 4-6pm and runs until the end of May.

Opening as part of CONTACT is Unauthorized Entry - Soft Forms in Hard Places, a collection of urban ruin photograph's by Kevin Lee. The images fuse photos of urban ruins with images of various models that were shot seperately in Lee's home studio. Open studio tours are on today and tomorrow at 52 St. Lawrence St, Studio 111 from 6:30pm to 10:30pm, as well as May 6th from 2pm to 7pm.
