Dhoad Gypsies: North American debut today

Posted by Kristine / November 19, 2005

05nov18Dhoad_group_1.jpgA last minute telephone call has provided me with the opportunity to witness the North American debut of the Dhoad Gypsies of Rajasthan. (Rajasthan is a province in the northwest of India)

As BlogTO.com readers may have gathered from previous reviews, I have a particular love of multidisciplinary performance. This may have to do with my short attention span but more likely it is a result of an ingrained adoration of spectacle.

The Dhoad Gypsies, presented by Small World Music, promises to provide that and more: with the artistic castes of the sapera-kalbelya ("fakirs", dancers and snake charmers), langas (poets), and manganyar (troubadours) this looks to be a promising event. I will let you know if it is was all that it appears to be.

One show only today at Saturday November 19th, 8pm at the Jane Mallet Theatre, 27 Front Street. Tickets are $30 at (416) 366-7723 or purchase on-line. For further information call (416) 631-4311.

Sorry, loves, but that was not me. I have not been in London since my Society for Creative Anachronism days many years ago....
