I knew of a few Toronto walking clubs before this weekend but found out about a bunch more this weekend as the city hosted the first ever "walking info fair" at the Todmorden Mills Heritage Museum and Arts Centre.

Despite competition from the various Jane's Walks and the annual Paddle the Don, turnout was surprisingly high as local clubs aimed to convince attendees that it was worth coming out to their upcoming events and become a member. Over 30 walking groups were on hand, many of which had a strong green bent. Some of my favourites included:

Toronto Bruce Trail Club
Organize carpool or bus hikes to bring people out of the City to different parts of the Bruce Trail surrounding Toronto.

High Park Family Nature Walks
One of Toronto's premier parks can be walked by the whole family with the help of interpretive staff.

Toronto Field Naturalists
More than just nature walks, this group seems to be all about understanding local ecology.

Toronto Ornithological Club
Organize outings for intermediate and beginner "birders".

Also at the event, Mayor Miller and Councillor Fletcher officially unveiled the new Exploring Toronto Parks and Trails map which features up-to-date trails and pathways along with a directory of clubs and associations. I already had a copy of the map (call 416-392-1111 ext.5 to get a copy sent in the mail) and think it's great for planning a day of biking, walking or hiking; and helped me more fully appreciate how the city's plans for linking biking and walking paths are coming together.
